Where to sell car?

Trying to sell the GF's 05 Grand Cherokee

Been on craiglist for a few weeks, few calls/test drives, but everyone says they are trying to sell there vehicle first, or huge low balls. It's listed less then blue book as is, and about where other Grand Cherokees are selling for.

I was thinking Auto Trader? Carsoup? Are any of those worth the money? How about the local papers...haven't done that in years.

you can also put your car on carshopper for free. I would not pay for auto trader, unless your car is really expensive and you want more people to see. I think just give it time. I sold two cars on craigslist. First car I sold in like 2 weeks, second car in like 16 days,

Lesson #1 of craigslist: Everyone on craigslist is an idiot.

Don't try and sell a car on there, you will get the bottom riff raff of society contacting you with the most insane questions and points of interest. As you have now seen. Sell it in the local paper. Forget autotrader, it does not move vehicles, either compared to the paper (in my experience).

You can put your car next to a busy street and get interest but again you will get idiots asking if they can make payments, have you hold it for two weeks, etc. These people should be put in labor camps.

Something about the paper at least in my experience is that you get people who actually know what a newspaper is and that immediately puts them above the intelligence of the rest of the people. You won't get some doofus who saw your car and gets distracted by wanting it despite honestly having no intention of buying a car.

Also, you still must realize that 4/5 of people who call you are being fvcking idiots and have no intention of buying your car, meeting you when they say they will, etc. so don't go out of your way. Have the car clean and ready to test drive but don't come back from work early or meet them anywhere or anything else. Again, go back to the 4/5 rule and you'll know why; chances are they won't show up anyway and "forget" to call you or, who knows, maybe fall off the earth. 1/5th of the people will be intelligent adults with available money and an actual intent to buy your car, they won't be idiots about it, you'll sign the papers, shake hands, and be done with it. I do think the cheaper the car the more idiots you get because as we all know poor people are more likely to be idiots.

I have sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist, and a few cars, so I know the idiots, I am just having a harder time selling her Grand Cherokee.

OH yeah, almost 70% were 'can I make payments' and the other 30% are 'I have to sell my car first'...never had this issue before.

This is actually the most expensive car i've tried to SELL on craiglist : 13,750. Which isn't all that much imo.

So auto trader works...sometimes? How many calls have you guys gotten from Auto Trader that were actually worth while? I will try carshopper, since it's free too.

I've had good luck with carsoup, I've sold 2 cars on it in the past. If I recall correctly you are near mpls/st paul. I think they may still allow you to run the basic add for free, I think I paid $20 or less for a few pictures and extra details. I think carsoup gets a decent amount of shoppers locally.

I used to use carsoup a lot, I like it the most...so many little sites to post cars on! Oy.

Looks like carsoup is $25 for the basics you were talking about.

I had tons of calls from autotrader and maybe 1 in 10 where real. The idiot level is extremely high just like craigslist but unlike craigslist 90% of the idiots call me instead of just e-mailing which is more annoying. Most of the idiots calling me would end up being 500 miles away, had a few that were 2000 away, or could barely speak english. Then you get the standard low ballers. Did sell my 2 cars eventually though by autotrader.

That's what I figured, at least craigslist I get local idiots. I might give it a few more weeks, before I put it on Auto Trader and Carsoup.

If you have a carmax near you, you can sell it there. They'll give you a pretty low quote but at least it can get taken care of cleanly.

Unfortunately for your girl friend the bottom dropped out of the SUV market and you can't go by blue book value. If it has around 70,000 miles, and is in good shape, because of the gas mileage, I'd say she'd be lucky to get $7,400. I sold my Buick on Craigslist in 2 days. What I did was look at the trade-in value, then added $300. So, if you do that for the Jeep Grand Cherokee she has, that would put it at an asking price of $7,125. At this point she might as well keep it for another 3 to 4 years because she'll still be able to get around $4,000 for it then.

We've got a fully loaded with every possible option imaginable 2003 Chevy Trailblazer Ext (seats 7 adults) with the 5.3 liter V8. If I needed to sell it I'd be lucky to get $7,000 for it and it only has 62,000 miles. So we'll drive it until the wheels fall off or 15 years, which ever comes first.

05 GC and an 03 Trailblazer are no where near the same vehicles....in my opinion.

Yeah, i'd figure it would be tough, but other GC's, same year, some model are going for more then what we have it in for.

And we have an extended warranty we can transfer.

But yes, worst case, we will just end up keeping it.

Oh, I know they are not the same vehicles. I was just trying to give an example and I forgot to put how much we paid new for it. Basically around $28,000 plus TTL, and we'd be lucky to get $7,000 for it 6 years later, or basically a 75% decrease in value.

I would never purchase a brand new SUV, expecting any sort of return after 6 years.

They depreciate too fast. It bluebooks at 17k, we're expecting 13500 for it. Listed it at 13750. That's as low as we can/will go. If it's not possible, we'll just keep it.

Neither would I, that is why I keep vehicles until the wheels fall off. I'm really not trying to upset you. In this economy, if you are selling something, people want it cheap. Just out of curiosity, what was the range of the low ball offers.

11k-12k.

That was from 3 people from dealerships asking to buy my car, and sell it to their clients looking for cars.

Two others said they'd pay for it at asking price, after a test drive, just needed to sell their vehicle.

Not bad. So I guess she'll have to decide if the $1,500 difference in what the wanting price and offered price makes it worth keeping the vehicle vs. getting the vehicle she wants.

By the way, don't take it personal, but if I were in the market for a used vehicle, I'd be making low ball offers as well. Just on the simple fact that I'm shelling out my mula and I'd want to keep as much as I possilby can.
