I have a HP ProCurve 1800-24G where I have my router, multiple NAS devices, and printer hooked up to. Then in my living room I have a green TrendNet gigabit switch in the living room that connects my Apple TV, Denon receiver, Mac Mini to the HP ProCurve 1800-24G.

I just bought a HP ProCurve 1800-8G for $30 (It was missing the power cord) and I want to be able to hook up my cluster of micro-PCs, desktop and printer to in the bedroom.

I'm guessing the best place for the ProCurve 1800-8G is in the bedroom. Should I do anything to setup the new switch?

Thanks,
Twesh

it should defaulted to all the ports on, on vlan1, so it should just work

and it sounds like it should go in your bedroom assuming its quiet enough, since you must not have cables ran to the 24 porter....

Yeah I wish I could run another cable to it but can't... Only here for 2 more months. Moved back to this place:

Re-terminated the ends with minimal loss of twisting and shielding on both ends. Accidentally bought flat CAT-6 cables from NewEgg and I think it's taking it's toll on speed between my Mac Mini and the desktop in my bedroom.

Is there any managed switch features I can take advantage of in this situation?

You can (if it supports snmp) use a free tool like mrtg to provide reporting on interface utilization. You can make multiple vlans to isolate machines to separate networks, but you will need a router to route between them. For most people a managed switch doesnt offer anything fun, but if you are running a business they are absolutely necessary.
