Where to live in Washington D.C/Southern MD? What broadband?

Hi all - was offered a position at Univ. of MD at College Park and I'm moving NOW. Any opinions about where to get a nice apt in the area is appreciated. I've been looking just north-northwest of college park, but haven't really found any true winners. Looking for a non-ghetto, pref. non-student apt complex or highrise. My whole ideal is to try and never touch the beltway. Looking to keep under $1200.

Also - what do you recommend in terms of broadband for this area - Cable or DSL? I do a lot of downloading, and gernally have my computer all day a runnin' so I'm thinking of going with DSL. I've also heard alot of bad things about Comcast, but opinions are welcome.

More importantly - need recommendations on a place to live. I may just go on a month to month for a while in case I don't like it.

Thanks!!

If you don't want to touch the Beltway, you don't want Southern Maryland, then. Have you looked in Silver Springs at all?

I'd look into Laurel, then. There are SOME ghetto parts of Laurel, but some are not bad. I'm an EXPERT at finding places to live in this area...if you need more help, you're welcome to PM me.

I currently live up in Germantown, and it's the best place (out of 5 or 6) that I've lived in the area, but that commute would suck for you. :|

Verizon DSL is the best in the area, depending on how far away you are from the CO. I'm about 15 feet away and I get blazing fast download speeds, on par with the t1 connection i have back at school.

Anyway, you can try looking in White Oak or silver spring, which aren't too far from the CP campus. Cost of living around here isn't too bad. You could also try finding a place in college park but its ghetto.

I can always count on good ol off topic anadntech 😉

I found a really cool place right next to NASA - Lakeside North - but its filled! Blast!
Daniel's Run is offering waived fees on sec dep and app fee...wondering if they're hurting for people and thats probably not good. Seems roomy for 955 though.

Seven Springs is offering 5% off to MD State employees, but has a deal this week 1054 - 150 off for a year on their midrise and highrise, except the garden apts, which are 1079 - 5%.

Opinions on these?

I currently have written down the following to look at this Sat and Sun. There's just too many damn places to look at!

Adelphi Springs, 9408 Adelphi Rd

Daniel's Run, 9228 Edwards Way (south of college park....maybe not a good idea)

VIllage Square, 12011 Veirs Mill Rd, Wheaton - expensive!

Seven Springs Village, 9438 Cherry Hill, College Park - might be super ghetto / student. there's tons of reviews @ aptreviews.com

Being that Silver Spring appears to be further into DC, I was figuring that it would be more ghetto - no? Are there any particular complexes that are nice in the Silver Spring area? Searching for them at the various apartment sites bring up hundreds of results - its really hard to figure out what its like without actually going there, but since when I go downtown I only have a few hours, its hard to see so many places! Grrr, this is annoying.

I'm almost to the point where I may just choose anything on a month-month rent and find a place during that month.

My sister has a place right next to GWU... furnished 1bedroom for $1400/mo. You're probably looking for something unfurnished so I'm sure that you'll be able to find one for under $1200.

edit:

forgot to add that she signed up for the Covad 64/200 DSL for $22 for the first 4 months hot deal that was posted here 😉

i have a buddy who lives in Wynfield Park apartments, on Rt. 1, right by U of MD

real nice place, and relatively affordable. gated community too.

Might be worth checking out

You're so wrong. As you move further into College Park, you get closer to DC, and hence moving toward worse and worse housing. There are some parts of Silver Spring that are ghetto, but Silver Spring is a very big community. The best housing is up New Hampshire Ave, towards and past Randolph Road.

Check out Laurel Lakes. You will be right off U.S. 1.

I live in P.G. County and parts of it are great. Route 193 is Greenbelt and Enterprise Road, and runs right into College Park, North of the Campus.

route 1 is evil!!! that IKEA is really going to hurt traffic....

welcome fellow marylander, and seven springs ain't that bad.... but yeah, it's filled to the brim with students.

what are you going to be doing at UMCP might i ask?

Thanks all for the replies! Sounds like DSL might be the way to go...any suggestions on hardware I need to buy instead of rent? I'll have at least two systems, plus a mac, and I currently have an elder D-Link 5-port switch.

Web Multimedia Specialist @ the virtual university of ODELL. Its a superb job, but is also quite overwhelming. I have a ALOT to learn about javascript.

Sounds like I just need to get my butt out there some more on Saturday - thanks everyone for giving general areas / streets to look around on. That helps a bunch in narrowing things down!

I like the gated communities - we actually looked at Triangle Towers, and I'll probably check out Wynfield, though last I remember, they may have been out of my price range. As nice as towers are, for what they generally charge I can get an apt with nearly 200-300 more sqft + washer/dryer built in for almost the same price. Its a tough choice to roll around on.

The DSL modem is free from Verizon. You can buy a switch or router from them if you want, but since you have a switch already, you can share the dsl using win 2k or just get a router.

thanks again everyone for your replies - too much to look at this saturday and sunday. any more opinions from the evening crowd?

thanks all for the replies.

Anyone have any opinions about Village Square?

Its in Wheaton, up Conn. -> Viers Mill Rd. Seems from the outset to be a really nice area, and they have a deal on a 2bed top floor apt for only $1200 - nearly 950sq ft. I looked at it yesterday, and thinkg I'll take it.

it's ghetto, stay out of wheaton. Look for places in potomac, silver spring, or germantown.
