It's good to shoot high, but I wouldn't go counting on it. And a couple of the places you listed might be a bitch to find something reasonable to live in that you could afford, even at 60k. In Manhattan 60k/yr is comparable to making 30k/yr in most other places.

I probably won't aim for a place to live on my own.

I hope to graduate from UW before you arrive I pray to god. Got an internship lined up and then a couple quarters to go hopefully we don't cross paths. Unfortunately the CSE building is connected to the EE building.

Oh man, I'm on the same boat with you.

One thing I hate a lot though is how all the CS folks in 002 think they're worth $30 an hour. Apparently, $14/hr is chump change over there... In EE, it's a damn good job.

I already did my internship and now am trying to finish my last year strong with two research ops. Hopefully it gets me to the next stage.

oh and @OP, if you're doing embedded (IIRC you're EE), bring a sleeping bag... and lots of energy drinks.

Unless you have a contract signed, you are making jack squat. We're sorry to burst your bubble TridenT, but the median salary in the US is ~$35k. With no experience and a degree, you will probably be making closer to that. The job market is highly skewed towards the employers, not the employees. Unless you have the mommy&daddy scholarship, you most likely will be living with them until you land a respectable job.

I highly suggest watching Avenue Q. Sure, it is hilarious, but in your case it may be very similar in experience to what you have in store soon...

Please stay out of California. I'm moving back, out of Washington, this year to get away from people like you.

You are also presuming you will graduate from UW which, with your work ethic and approach to challenges, I think may be an optimistic assumption.

Your mom's basement. It's really the only place you've ever been comfortable.
The cheap rent makes it easier to pay off debts

Those statistics are from a survey of idiots like you lying to themselves about how much they make. Especially at whatever crappy school you're at.
I really wish people would be completely honest with those. If you can't get a job and you're working at K-Mart, tell them that. It'll lower the numbers so people have more realistic expectations going into that program.
The job I have right now is very closely in line with the average from the job survey I looked at for EE a few years back. I'm so glad the people who answered the survey a few years back were honest :)

3.92 GPA. My work ethic seems to not be so bad.

2nd, there are only really only two industries that are hiring now....Environmental engineering and defense. Defense was a guaranteed 60K 5 years ago, but they have since dropped in salary since engineers out of college are now unemployed. Face it, engineers are not has hard to find as they were years ago, especially in this economy. As for Environmental, you are gonna be paid a Civil Engineers salary because they are Civil firms that do the hiring.
lol. That's interesting you say that. I'm an electrical engineer and I work for a civil engineering company. Working on city stuff because cities are still building/upgrading things :p

Glad to hear you're already in a challenging top tier school and holding onto that GPA. Which university are you at right now? What's your courseload? How long since you finished your general ed?

I'm really not worried about that at all. I'll be making decent bank for my first job in the industry.

I'll be making over $60k for my first job, and that's the low-end.

I see you are one of the elite entitled ones, congrats!

when that fails take Boomer's advice.

I think the guy was doing Running Start. So... if that's the case... community college. Community college IMO is a challenge in itself trying to understand the professors and learning on your own.

oh god you should see some of the math professors at university of alberta. Super thick accent. It's impossible to understand anything he's talking about.

Some accents help though. My electronics teacher would say some of the funniest things just due to bad translation.
"So one day you will be in the field and your boss call you. He said 'how going are the things in the field?' and you will need to explain how is it going."

He was Romanian :D

There are far less resources at your disposal if that is what you're getting at, then I can see it being more of a challenge in some aspects.

Out of curiosity, what degree will you be getting? BS? MS? What field?

Bachelor's most likely, Computer Science.

If you are getting a B.S. in computer science from the University of Washington, I don't understand why you'd want to leave Seattle. You should have some roots down after 4 years of college, the tech industry is huge, and its one of the hip trendy places that everyone seems to want to move to. There is no income tax either.

The grass is not greener.

It's fucking gray and rainy 366 days of the year. I'd like to live in a city where it's sunny more often or at least with a higher density of people. Seattle is far too spread out.
