med/long term: United States i bonds from ustreas.gov since they're paying more than any savings or CDs right now and you don't have enough to start buying a nice S&P 500 index fund like Vanguard's VFINX without paying "account maintenance fees" that would eat up any profit.

Past performance does not imply future results, but VFINX is up over 20% for the year, and Vanguard's account maintenance fee is only $10 (1% for the $1000 investment). That's not a reason that I'd choose to purchase bonds instead.

But I certainly wouldn't buy an index fund if you're only going to park your money there for a year or two.

Black Jack sucks for one hand play.
You might as well try something like Crab.

If you want to buy stock, MACR looks good (not now, but it will go up.)
