Pedantic++. This is like the theater techs that roll their eyes when you tell them the bulb blew in one of the lights.

I got to the point where I started using "boat" as much as possible just to annoy the kind of people that would be annoyed by it!

Anyway, friends of mine went to Hawaii for their honeymoon, and they liked it so much they decided to return the following year. We invited them on our European tour this year only to be turned down - they had just booked their next trip to Hawaii.

That said, since you are on the east coast and trying to save a bit, cruising may be a great way to go since you may be able to save on or eliminate air travel. We loved it. Seasickness shouldn't be a huge concern unless your fiancee is really susceptible to it. My mother couldn't watch me play "Descent" without getting queasy, but she was just fine cruising...and she did it in the 1970s where the boats were much smaller and did not have the astounding stablizing technology that today's ships have.

She wants Hawaii but I think it has turned more into a tourist trap then anything over the years. That and now that Lost is filmed there, don;t forget thats on tonight, people are going there for that somewhat. Same problem when Mag. PI was filmed there.

Thanks for all the ideas and keep them coming. :)

I strongly disagree with your opinion that Hawaii is a tourist trap. Sure if you stick around the major metro areas or shopping malls then that could be true. But the beauty of Hawaii is Hawaii itself. The snorkeling, beaches, scenery (Hana Highway in Maui comes to mind) and the people are what make it special IMO. When I go, I only stay in town to sleep and to eat. Other than that, we're out and about, hiking, driving, snorkeling, and having a ball.

Seems like even Hawaii kinda agrees with me...

Tourism industry officials... are being more selective in attracting those they consider the most desirable tourists.

Not what i want to hear when I drop a good amount of money. :p

If you decide to go with Hawaii, try some of the less traveled islands, like Kauai or the big island. Lots of stuff to do other than beaches (hiking, river "rafting", helicopter rides, etc.) and probably not as expensive as the more "tourist-y" islands. Unless you're going to book the honeymoon suite at one of the hotels, look into the condo rentals there. They, in some cases, are much nicer than a hotel room (I stayed in one that had a Viking stove, Subzero fridge, Harmon Kardon THX system with 36" TV, wireless internet access, among other things) and considerably cheaper (no room service, valets, and that kind of thing though).

Many places have rent by the week deals. you can get beautifully furnished 2bedroom apartments in places like belgium and italy for 600-1000 a week. YMMV

Surprised no one's mentioned Puerto Rico.

Seems like it has everything you're looking for - the beaches, the historic districts, the culture, and some amazing food =)

I haven't been there for a few years now, but if you have any specific questions, I'll try to answer. Also, regarding the cruises I remember seeing a ton of them in San Juan so I imagine it's a fairly popular port of call for the ships, possibly something to look into.

Wherever you end up going - Enjoy it and Congrats in advance =)

I just spent a few days on Kauai at the Marriot Resort. Pricey, but fabulous.
You could also rent a nice condo cheaper, try Ebay.
Kauai is so quiet and relaxing, totally different than Oahu.

I think Myan Ruins would be neat and there has to be beaches in South America and Mexico.

Cuba probably has some nice beaches real cheap.
