Here's my suggestion.....Get a HD RPTV, quality is MUCH better, and price is MUCH cheaper. Plasma is only for fools who have too much money.

Some Plasmas have less that 1080 lines of resoultion. Avoid those.

Why get a plasma? If you need to hang it on a wall, which is nice.
4-5" deep.

Why not? Cost.

There is a newer rear projection technology that uses a LCD to project.
It's better than the older CRT rear projection. Picture is great. Also it's only about 12-18 inches deep opposed to 2-3 feet of the CRT Rear projection TV's. Cost is a lot less than Plasmas. Take a look at your
local big TV store.

Tough choice isn't it? :)
I really don't know, LCD looks nice and it's a safe technology that has been around for long, but I read they are even more expensive than plasma :(

Maybe a projector? Great for watching DVDs but television news, hmm. And you need a nice piece of wall for them ;)

OK, plasma I wouldn't buy, there seem to be some flaws with the technology (life-span, too dark...).

Ok so i read about plasma and it does seem still very inadequate for my grandfathers needs. He wants to watch his boxing, his news his "Cops" etc etc. and i dont need him to go and get it fixed if some image gets burned in, wth is that about!

So im going to look into those Rear Projection LCD's anyone got any links to go kinds or reviews of them? Thanks

Projection = ass. IMO.

One of the better ways, go to a store, and look at a bunch of displays side by side. Write down model numbers, then do some research on them at home online :)

Look at the relative life span of plasma vs LCD. LCD has about a 5 time longer expected life. The besty picture I have seen so far (HDTV) is the Sony XBR LCD Projection TV.

What is that technology called? Who sells TVs based on that technology?

I have a 43inch Toshiba HDTV 16:9 projection screen I bought from costco (only $1500), it has awesome quality and doesn't take up much space. Worth looking at if you don't mind convential projection.:)

There are several alternate technologies to plasma and all are rear projection. While they do not have the 4 inch thickness of plasma monitors, they come closer to that mark than CRT based TV and CRT based RPTVs. Thickness might not be a factor unless your friend is going to hang it on a wall. But generally yes, thin is definitely in.

The technologies are for RPTVs: LCD, DLP, and LCoS.

LCD based RPTVs are usually Sony Grand Wegas (Currently II but III is coming up) and it has been reported that some BestBuys have started receiving Panasonic 50LC13s, Panasonic's latest LCD offering. No burn in. Some disadvantages to consider in IMO are:
1) Screendoor effect
2) Possible dead pixels
3) Black levels aren't that great

DLP based RPTVs are usually Samsung HLN series. RCA has released their Scenium (sp?) line based on DLP as well with an integrated HDTV OTA tuner I think sor perhaps the prices will come down. Lightweight at around 80-120 pounds and 17-20 inches in depth and attractive to boot. No burn in. Some disadvantages:
1) Rainbows - some people notice them, most don't unless they try to
2) Possible "dead" mirrors - I've read some reports of these but they are few and far in between
3) Black levels are still not BLACK but better than LCD
Price ranges from 2800-4500

LCoS based RPTVs are usually Toshibas though they are coming out with a new line. Not to familiar with them them nor have I seen them but there seems to be a favorable response on AVS. No burn in. Seemed pricer than Samsung DLP sets for the same screen size.

Sorry, I'm mostly familiar with DLP. Saw it once and knew that was the one. Still waiting for the 43" set to become widely available again, prices have gone higher since.

he's right.

plasmas are inferior in terms of image quality. they are getting by on novelty alone at the momment. unless he lives in a hole in the wall, i'm sure you can fit a normal tv at your gramps:) plasma resolutions are generally far inferior, and contrast/color reproduction are just sad. the poor things just can't display anything darker then grey:p

and bang for buck? you pay dearly for novelty.

Went to circuit city fell in love with the 43" DLP. However i was told that you have to replace the bulb every 2 years, and the warranty is 600$ for 5 years thats INSANE considering the TV only has a lifespan of a couple yaers. The guy said that they arent to reliable.

It has to be very reliable and hassle free since its for my grandfather.
