Where to get real milk crates cheap?

I need milk crates, not the cheap wal-mart kind that are flimsy. I need the real kind used for carrying milk, I need about 40 for a storage scheme in my garage, they are perfect.

I live in VT. Should I call the local dairy? Find out their supplier? I might be willing to go as high as 5 bucks a crate but 2-3 would be preferable.

Do they stop using them at any point for some reason? Can I get them used?

Yes, I have considered stealing them over time. I don't want to risk getting pulled over with anywhere form 8 to 30 milk crates tossed in the back of my jeep. Meanwhile the officer is looking for the crate bandit.

What makes you think they would be 3 dollars when a plastic storage bin at walmart is like 10 bucks while being much crappier?

Damn those are all expensive.

I know lots of people who accumulate milk crates over time (like, a dozen). Like they get passed along through friends and family members when they move. There must have been a lot of crate stealers, and continue to be.

Also, living in VT there are some big recycle store operations that I'm going to call. 5 bucks a crate is my limit

When I was young, my dad was a milkman (hold off with your lame ass jokes k?). We still have quite a few milk crates from back then. Moral of the story? Be a milkman.

or the son of one...

Universal solution...cherry chapstick, some short shorts and cruise behind the store winking at any dude you see.

Maybe you can work out more than one.

My parents got a whole bunch when a local dairy went under. (Western NH for reference)

At the camp I work at, the distributor will give us old milkcrates. I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong with them, but you might wanna call a distributor and find out?

I would guess they might be used for more then just milk, maybe check the grocery store too. I have one at home I can spare. 😛 (would probably not be worth shipping that lol)

I used to get them for free at a convenience store all the time. they said they just threw them away. They had big stacks too!

I can't tell if you're being serious, but they don't throw them away. They sometimes store them near the dumpster, but the milk man picks them up when he drops off milk. I figure since you took them under the cover of night, you probably knew that. 😉

I guess it seems kind of silly to store a couple hundred dollars worth of milk crates outside where anyone can steal them, but they just take up too much room to store them anywhere else. They don't get "misappropriated" that often, and I guess it's just a cost of doing business (for the milk company - the store doesn't pay for the stolen crates, at least not in my experience).
