I've got a couple jars of pennies, a separate jar of dimes, and a separate jar of nickels. Where can I take it to have it changed to dollars? Will banks take that much coins?

Yes they will... my dad took $90+ worth of pennies to the bank... :Q the teller was literally like... holy isht! :D

But they charged $0.10 per roll... :( and i think it HAS to be rolled... i'd hate to be your teller if you didn't roll it up. :)

Well if you don't mind paying a few $$ to have it done there are machines around where you can just dump it in.

We have them at Kroger around here.

well i don't know if you have to put it in those rolled up paper things... i just thought the least we could do was roll it up for them. :)

but some supermarkets have those machines where you practically dump all your coins and it figures it all out for you then prints a certificate that you could cash at the cashier... i'm sure they charge a premium there too though.

EDIT... too slow... :) they already said it... :D

Yeah, in my neck of the woods those machines in the grocery stores are called coinstar. I think they charge something like 3% to do it. You dump all of your coins in and it prints out a receipt which you take to a register and they give you your $$......

All the coins that I have saved up would most likely break the machine. Last count, I was up around 75lbs of assorted coins.

Just go to the bank and ask for the rolls. They will give you the paper to roll the coins in for free. Roll the coins yourself and take them in to the bank.

I've never taken more than $30 worth of change to my bank at a time (don't want to look like an idiot carrying it in) but my bank changes it into bills for me. They have an auto-sorter machine they just dump the change into.

came back from washington mutual recently. i had about $75 in wrapped coins (no pennies). for the first time since i've done this, i was told that after 4 rolls they would charge $0.10 per roll. i thought this was incredible.

anyhow, so some people mention banks that don't charge for taking rolls or even some banks that have machines you can dump unsorted change into. which banks are these?

i also have a water cooler jar almost full of pennies, that i gotta take care of one of these days. would be nice if i could dump it into a machine somewhere without getting charged

I doubt you can walk into any bank and expect them to sort that much change for free. My bank is First National of Omaha, but I've never tried to do that much change there either. Call around and see what you come up with.

Hmm...

At my bank, Wells Fargo, they just take the change, put it into a machine.. and it counts it, and then they give you the cash.

You have to have an account with the bank though, or they'll charge you to do it.

my bank has a giant change machine they pour change into, it sorts it and doesn't cost me a cent.

I believe BofA rolls are free, but you gotta do em yourself....

Coinstar will rape you, but it's a lot easier.

Technically then... isn't the machine soliciting? :D

Yeah. Time is worth more than money. Pay the little fee for the coinstar to save you time and it'll give you bills.

The only problem that I've had when turning in rolled coins at the bank was that they would insist that I put my name and social security number on the rolls. Had I known about this before I started rolling the coins, it would have been much easier to write the information on the paper rollers before inserting the coins.
