Where to get 800 or 1000 grit sandpaper for heatsink lapping?

I'll be lapping my new Alpha 8942 in a day or two and absolutely cannot find any hardware stores that carrry any sandpaper at all with a grit finer than 600. I'm in Northern Viriginia btw, and have been shocked that I couldn't find at least one store up here that carries what I need.

And do you really even need to go that fine? I've seen conflicting reports on several web sites saying that after a good sanding with 600 grit there is no appreciable temperature difference.

Not sure about the diff in lapping with 600 or 800 - probably makes more of a diff in using a nice thin layer of thermal compound and getting the hsf mounting correctly. I've been starting with 440, then 800 then 2000 grit paper. They do shine afterwards 🙂.

You should be able to find fine grit paper at an auto parts store. I found mine at Walmart in the automotive section.

600 grit will do fine. anything finer than that will just be wasting time. A shiny surface doesn't mean its a smoother surface.

If you have to try it try checking an auto parts store. They usually have what you need.

I was focused on hardware and completely forgot about an auto parts store. I'll check the local Walmart today. Thx much for your responses.
