Where to find a good website database guy?

Hey all,

I want to add a bunch of stuff to the website, as well as improve the "administration" section of the website. The administration section is typically where a non-website designer guy such as myself can go and input fields and they will be automatically correctly updated within the site.

After living with my current site for five months, I'd like to take it to the next level. Unfortunately I don't know how to go about finding capable help at a reasonable rate. Do you guys have any recommendations, on websites, companies, or even specific individuals themselves?

The website in question is listed below. I designed the layouts and graphics for the site, and an old friend did the database layout. He can no longer help me due to his new job. Specifically, I'd like to add a basic product catalog, and tweak the "testimonial" and "portfolio" sections. I'd also like to make the updating of the above easier in the administrative portions.

Thanks for any help guys.

if your website is ASP, Asp.net or MSDN might be a good source.

There are tons of good sources online too.

Thanks for the start. Any other online sources you can think off the top of your head?

Hell I wouldn't be surprised if you got some people interested on AT. Post some information in the IT Job thread stickied at the top of OT.

Just so you know, what you described is known as a CMS - content management script

What do you consider a reasonable rate? Development work isn't cheap

You can test a few content management systems online at opensourcecms.com. They let you login as an administrator and play around with the whole system. That'll help you get an idea of which CMS better suits your needs.

I recommend Drupal (used by sites like The Onion). It takes less than 30 minutes to install and configure most CMS. If your web host is running CPanel/DirectAdmin, chances are that there's a built in installer for a few popular CMS systems. Otherwise, if your web server is PHP/MySQL based, PM me and I'll help you install whatever you pick.

Also, avoid PHPNuke like the plague.

BigJ - I will get on that as well. Thanks!

AgaBoogaBoo - I believe what we were paying on paper somewhere around $30-40/hr, but in actuality he actually made more than that because he was so efficient with his work. It was a fusion of goal based-pay with pre-determined hourly estimates. It worked out great for both parties; I have a general idea of how long things take, but I'm all for someone making more money if they're great at what they do.

George - Thanks for taking the time to reply. Frankly, I'm not sure how to incorporate such a site module into my current system. Given the fact that our site didn't fit a standard layout type, I'm not sure how to make this all work together. I wish I had known about CMS when planning all this stuff out for our site design, but I'm lost a bit. Trying out the demos just leaves me confused. I really appreciate the help though.
