I had to install Win X from scratch and now I can't view most of the video files on my old HDD. Trying to go through and see which I need to keep but they almost all fail.

Is there somewhere to download a big huge pack that includes all the current codes so I dont' have to go searching for everything?

And/Or is there any program that can load a video file and tell what codec it needs so I can then go find it?

Thanks.

Yeah, there are lots of codec packs out there... do a google search for 'divx codec pack' and you'll see lots of results and download links. Nimo, tsunami, k-lite, xvid, etc... i personally don't like codec packs, they always give me more problems than they help. If i were you, i would just install each codec that you need individually, then save the original installation file in a folder specifically for codecs.

ffdshow should be enough to play almost everything you see out there. You might need the OGG filter if you like to watch videos with more than one language track.

I don't like codec packs myself either.

How do I figure out what codec a file needs? I normally just use Windows Media Player 9. Does it have a way to show what codec soething needs?

My vote is for k-lite mega pack as well. It's of dubious legality, but includes codecs for anything you could possibly play including DVDs.

I'll vote for ffdshow. The divx codec they use consumes far less processing power. A must for older systems, or laptops (saves power and your fan wont go on so much).

DO NOT INSTALL CODEC PACKS. Use G-Spot to find out what codec you are missing when a file doesn't play and just get that specific codec. Here is a list of main ones:

PowerDVD/WinDVD for an MPEG codec.
FFDShow.
Xvid 1.0 codec
3ivx codec (recently came out)

Grab other crap as necessary.

I had bad luck with ffdshow, it made some of my divx moves grainy, the real divx codec solved that.

However I keep it around mainly for xvid.
