Where to buy WD 640GB HDD?

Been wondering if there is another place to buy this hdd as I've seen a ton of complaints about them being DOA and badly shipped from Newegg lately. Any recommendations?

A "Ton?" Only 7% of the people who wrote reviews of this drive gave it 1 or 2 eggs, and most people who have no problems don't leave feedback. I have ordered several hard drives from Newegg and have never felt the need to complain about their packaging. Some people will complain about anything.

The only thing you need to worry about is how much more you would pay or how badly the packaging would be if you ordered from someone other than newegg.

I read that also, but..

I just built a computer and my uncle built the exact same setup. We both ordered our wd 640aaks's from Newegg. They were packaged very good, and we got 4 total. They work flawlessy.

Its more than just 7% I'm afraid. Several people ordered 2 hdds and one of them was DOA. They rated it 4-5 eggs because of the performance but the fact that several hdds have been delivered DOA from reliable companies like Newegg and WD makes me think it has something to do with the poor wrapping recently being used. I don't want to be playing the RMA game with Newegg and have to pay for return shipping.

If drives are arriving DOA then it's WDs fault, not Neweggs. HDs are quite robust if they aren't powered up. The HD in this computer is from a machine that was launched off of a second story balcony. It's been working flawlessly for 6 months or so.

Sounds like there is an interesting story behind that one.

For what it's worth, when my Samsung Spinpoint arrived DOA I emailed a newegg rep and told them politely that I thought it was unfair that I was paying more (through shipping) and having my build delayed because of a part that arrived broken. They gave me a free shipping label no questions asked.

That is why they are the best place to order computer items bar none. Whenever I have talked to a cs rep (which I haven't needed to very often at all) they have been willing to bend the rules to please their customer. I will order from Newegg even when their price might be a few dollars more than the competition.

I have been a NE user for quite some time and have rarely had to RMA anything with them but the sheer number of DOA and poor packaging comments simply can't be ignored. I hope nobody got the impression I have a beef with NE as I think they are a great company but I can't pretend that this issue doesn't exist. I haven't found the WD 640 on sale anywhere else and I was hoping to check reviews on another site in order to determine if this is a hardware or a shipping issue.

You also don't know the number of drives newegg sold overall, so you are still jumping to conclusions. Since newegg is the only place you can find these right now, and the fact that it is THE fastest 7200 RPM drive out right now, I imagine they have sold several times more than the rating numbers would indicate. I will probably be ordering one shortly.

but if you read the actual reviews most of those giving 4 say the HDD ordered from newegg were poorly packed.

That being said, the price is great so I just went ahead and ordered one from the egg. Then I torture tested it, and since it passed I am keeping it, had it failed I would have RMA'ed it with WD directly, not through newegg, and gotten a quality, well packed drive from WD directly.

packaged poorly means what?

You can spew that out on the forum all you want, but it means little when you say it without describing what you are talking about when you say "poorly packaged"

Some example given were not enough bubble wrap and brown paper wrapping around drive with drive on bottom of box and peanuts on top instead of bubblewrap. Read from 3-eggs and lower to see these comments.

All of my oem drives from Newegg have been completely surrounded by bubble wrap. I'd be interested in seeing how the complainants drives were wrapped.

My story for the dropped computer isn't that interesting. I had pulled 2 old computers out of the dumpster at work.I hadn't put them in my Jeep yet, and the previous owner saw them sitting there, took them up to the second story and threw them off. I'm not sure what the goal was, but it didn't work. depending on my mood, that could have ended in in violence for him, but I wasn't in the mood for confrontation that day. When those computers went in the trash they ceased being his, and became mine.

I was pretty pissed. I have a friend that doesn't have a lot of money, and I wanted to put together a computer for him. As it turns out the mb on the better computer had blown caps, and the other one was just too damned old. I did get a couple of hds, some memory, and a decent cpu out of the 2 computers though. I would have liked having one of the cases, because it was kind of nice.

I thought about being a dick, and mail the contents of his hd back to him. I'm siure some of the people in his office would have been interested in his PowerPoint porno demos :^P

Yes beware!

If you buy one you're usually OK. Buying more than one what the eggheads are doing is taping two together then bubblewrapping the bundle. This is not acceptable (safe) practice to ship a HDD! Most mfr's (that's short for manufacturer not what some people say when they're mad!) will VOID any warranties on returned products if they were shipped like that! I've received hard drives with DENTS in the top cover due to this. Shock resistance of a non operating drive is very good but still!

Bought one of these drives from new egg it worked perfectly. I agree with Ruby is they are indeed taping two together for ship is totally unacceptable.

Wrapped in nothing more than brown paper? Don't you think that's pretty poor packaging?

I've received three drives in the last 6 weeks or so...two were the 640AAKS models, all work just dandy.

Love the Egg.....

My drives have worked without any flaws at all. Ordered a total of 4 wd 640gb hd's from the Egg.

Mine were bubble wrapped together, but the way it was done there was no way that they could be damaged in shipping. Everyone mentions the drives that are DOA but you have to remember that everytime someone gets a good one they don't get on here and post about it. It could be 100 drives out of 1 million. We had 4 and they are all fine, and were packaged very well.
