I got a nice set of 5-45# w/ a stand from Sams Club a few years ago for around $250. They are nice shaped for the grips and have the rubber padding...which makes them quieter to move around/don't chip but it does smudge/smear on skin and clothes.
Pretty happy with the set. It's hard to find the bigger ones though. You'll have to look at specialty sporting goods shops for them and pay around .50 a pound. Yeh it adds up.
Best bet for cheap is scouring craigslist for people looking to unload for pennies on the pound.
Craigslist is usually the best bet in terms of prices and selection, but you'll need to be patient for a deal to show up. Other resources worth looking at are freecycle (network of people giving stuff away for free), oodle, ziark, and facebook marketplace.
Cheapest alternative: standard plates and dumbell bars from CL.
Saves space too. Of course, you have to always swap out plates.
Another advantage: If you buy some 1" washers, you can vary the weight in them very precisely.
Yea another vote for Craigslist. You'll find people moving that don't want to drag weights with them, gyms going out of business/upgrading, etc. Brand new weights can be very expensive.

Years ago when I use to work out in my garage I'd check garage sales for equipment, especially around this time of year when all those who got stuff for Christmas and never really got into the fitness routine and they'd were unloading stuff for spring cleaning. For dumbbells I bought plates and a lot of bars and made my own sets so I didn't have to change plates for different weights. It was a lot cheaper than buying dumbbells. It didn't look as cool or was as neat and tidy but it did the job just the same
Here in Toronto one can get 300 lbs of Olympic weights with a 7' bar for $225CAD and a half-rack for $185CAD. In the States, you should be able to undercut that by at least 25%.
EDIT: Didn't realize you were looking for dumbbells. Still, weights can be had for pennies on the dollar if you know where to look.
