I've got a buddy who is a car guy, we're trading fix-it favors and he's doing my brakes for me. Car is a 2005 Saturn ION 1 sedan. 61k miles, first brake job. Fronts are discs, rears are drums. I believe I need new pads & rotors for the front, and shoes for the rear, and maybe some new drums if they're not too pricey (he said check the price, then we'll check it while doing the rest of the job). I'm also supposed to look for a disc mounting kit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'm not familliar with brakes at all 😀

you don't need to do all the brakes at the same time. rear drums can often go 100k+ before needing new shoes. just make sure that they're adjusted properly- the shoes should barely be dragging on the drums. if you can spin the rear wheels in the air and they just seem to go on for days, you need to adjust.

i like rockauto.com for online parts, but brake stuff should be about the same price locally. napa or carquest usually has the best stuff, maybe oreillys, i usually try and avoid advance and autozone because stuff like brakes is usually shitty house brands.

I shopped around online and then compared locally - yup, might as well go local. I found a brake pad kit that includes the hardware, so I'll snag that with some new rotors, rear shoes, and rear springs for the brakes. That's what the guy at the local shop told me as well - the rears just usually need adjustment.

Yay for not breaking the bank 😀

You probably don't need new rotors, but if they're cheap you might as well replace them anyway. You might not even need new shoes for the rear - keep the receipt so you can return them. 🙂

What hardware comes with a 'brake pad kit'? I've always just replaced pads. 😕 Oh - grease the caliper's slide pins too..you should be able to get a small tube of grease for them.

I'm doing the rear drums on my van. Get the right tools. Drums are a PITA. And only do one side at a time so you can look at one to see how the other goes back together. Even if you have a book being able to see it in person is a huge help.
