Where to buy ATI Silencer 5? **Found it**

I have an x800XL that I would like to run cooler/quieter. Artic Cooling recommends the ATI Silencer 5, but I can't find this product for sale ANYWHERE. Is it not out yet, or am I just not looking in the right place?

Pretty sure they only have up the 4 for ATI. Which can be found here

EDIT: You apear to be right. they do make ATI Silencer5's for 850's and 800 XL's I can't say I have seen them for sale yet though sorry.

Has anyone seen this for sale lately? Arctic Cooling hasn't replied to my emails, and it isn't listed on Pricewatch.

Well, it appears Newegg has the ATI Silencer 5 Rev 2. For $45 though! I think I'll wait until it sells for a more reasonable price (<$30).

NEWEGG

Good thing it's not the other way around... the 6800's seem to need them a lot more than the current crop of ATI cards.

Newegg still has over 99 in stock at $45 shipped; if us consumers refuse to pay this ridiculous price, they will drop the price shortly. Every time their inventory on an item has stayed above 99 for a week, they drop prices.

the build quality of these things suck

i've been through two of them on my x800

just stick with your stock one they are very similar, minus the noise 😉

Except the stock cooler pulls in hot case air and exhausts it right back into the case. The Artic Cooling solution draws in cool outside air and exhausts out the back of the case, so the case temps stay lower and the cooling air is colder, for a double benefit.

The stock cooler isn't that loud, but with only a 5% overclock on my x800XL, the GPU gets near 70 Deg C. Any higher, and I get artifacts. Not to mention, my case temp went up over 5 Deg C when I installed the x800XL.

i read it wrong

i thot u had an x850 for some reason

Directron has it for $37.33 shipped.

DIRECTRON

The sound level of 0.5 Sones they list is roughly equivalent to 30 dBA. In other words, mucho quiet.

For those who don't want to spend $40 on this cooler, the ATI Silencer 4 mostly fits on the X800Xl.

The reason I say mostly, is there are two memory chips that don't make perfect contact. One is on the back of the card; it doesn't make contact with the cooler at all. This could be solved by using a thermal pad, which is thicker than the AS5 thermal compound I used. On the front of the card, there is one memory chip that doesn't make perfect contact. Approximately 3/4 of the chip contacts the cooler, the other 1/4 doesn't.

Other than that, the AS4 fits the X800Xl perfectly. The core makes perfect contact, which is the most important part.

I got mine for $23 shipped at Jab-tech, significantly cheaper than the new version.

Apparently jab-tech has the ATI Silencer 5 as well, $33 shipped. Or you could buy the 4 like sellmen suggests and use some tricks to get contact with the RAM, although it doesn't seem to worth the risk to me.

There isn't much risk involved. There is only one RAM chip that doesn't make contact, and that is on the back. Using the stock cooler, the four RAM chips on the back aren't cooled in any way, so you aren't losing anything.

I didn't even bother with the thermal pad, I just left the RAM chip alone. If you plan on seriously overclocking the RAM it might make a difference.
