Yes, I am aware that there are many results returned at google.com and I do stand in awe of the 1,190,000 results returned for "engagement rings"

... However, I also value the opinions of people here at Anandtech and would like to hear some of their recommendations.

Btw, michelle and me (taken awhile back)

I'd say do it at a reputable local place. You won't get quite the price as Bluenile, but you'll get to see it before you buy it, thus you can make sure you get exactly what you want. In addition, if you aren't going for a flawless diamond you can pick one where the flaws are less obvious. Plus the dealer is always close to clean and inspect the ring. Make sure you get educated about diamonds first, and make sure the dealer is certified. I purchased my wife's engagement ring locally and I am very pleased with the results. Finally, make sure to bargain with the price! I took in a printout of comparable diamonds from bluenile and got a much better deal.

Hmm... what kind of local dealers are good and which should I avoid? I've heard the ones in the mall are the worst to go to, but I'm not sure of many other places.

I always buy from Zales. I got my wifes 1/3 carrat flawless engagement ring (certifed and apprased at 1400) for 600. (find out who the head manager is, and a few weeks later go in and ask her (all the Zales I've been to had female managers) what would be nice for an engagement ring.

There ya go. 😉

First of all, make bloody sure you really do want to marry this girl. No offense intended - just make SURE. 😛

Then check out BlueNile as Zim suggested. Have a look at rings that you think are a nice design - hopefully she's given at least some hints as to what kind she prefers. Print a few pics out and head to a local store to compare. Better to be able to see it in person and pick the exact ring you want.

Oh, and know her correct ring size. Good luck. 🙂

1. find out what kind of ring the girl likes
2. find a diamond broker in your area
3. go shop at every jewelry store and compare prices/specs
4. go back to the diamond broker, have them put together the same ring you liked at the jewelry stores
5. be happy that you saved a sh!t ton of money
