It this industrial place in the industrial part of town. They do forklift bottles for $15 and grill bottles for $5. However, its been a few years, maybe I'm remembering wrong.

Propane is $1.08/gal... a 20lb tank is $4.86 no tax with 4.5gal in it. Unless your the distributor, your not getting it that cheap :)

Tip - get TWO. Refill when it's convenient, that way you never run out of propane in the middle of bbq chicken.

Also, a source I've used for a few tanks (I have 4 or 5) is people throwing out old tanks with their grills.

Wal-Mart sells tanks. I get my 2 (see DrPizza above) filled locally because my grill has a funny valve that you won't find in the replacement tank places.

I think it depends upon how much propane you use.

I am a very casual user, so I am content to pay higher per unit prices with Amerigas; I don't use a full tank each year and I like option of being able to trade the old, rusted tank for a presumably newer one each couple years.

If you are a power user, getting your own tank (has to have appropriate connector for your grill) and refilling it yourself at propane center or even hardware store is going to be most economical.

A power user would just tap his grill into the natural gas line of his home.

Every home improvement store on the planet sells propane tanks. Not to mention hardware stores, BBQ/fireplace stores and, camping stores. The reason Blue Rhino and other exchange type dealers are a rip off is because they only fill the tanks to 60 %
