Where should I meet someone for a Craigslist transaction?

I'm selling an Xbox 360 on Craigslist. I'm sure people will want to test it. However, I feel uncomfortable having a stranger coming into my house and seeing all my expensive electronics and valuables since the person will have to come inside to test it. I know some people wouldn't want me coming over to their place for the same reason. Where would be a good place to meet where the buyer would be able to test the Xbox? I can easily bring along my LCD PC monitor which has component inputs for testing since I have a carrier for it. I was thinking about something like a library or something but I'm not sure how they'd feel about someone bringing in an Xbox.

Actually, I just thought of a good place. I'll just have him meet me in the rec room of a friend's apartment complex.

I dunno, I guess people are paranoid? I've purchased and sold a bunch of things on Craigslist. Every single transaction took place at my or their house.

I generally do not meet people from CL at my house either for the reason the OP stated, and also so they don't show up on my doorstep the next day wanting a refund for whatever reason.

I sold a router at a garage sale once, and the guy returned a week later saying he decided he didn't know how to set it up and wanting a refund. Luckily the sale wasn't at my house, so my relative told him they couldn't take it back.

I thought it was common knowledge that when you buy from a garage sale it's ASIS.

Same here. many of these transactions took place in a city of +1 million too. Then again I don't lock my car doors as often as I should (or so I'm told) and have never had any problems there, either.

yea, you'd think...

There's a bank near me with a huge outer atm section. It's a room outside the main office with 5 atms and a bunch of tables. I use it all the time since it has cameras all over the place and I can deposit the cash right away. I also just list all my items 'as is' and don't worry about testing anything. No problems so far.

if you are that worried, get one of those AC converters for your car so you can plug your xbox into your cigarette lighter. Then, meet in a parking lot.

BTW, that seems way more sketch then meeting at someones house. If someone told me I was going to meet them at a parking lot so we could could conduct some business, I would think that they stole whatever they were trying to sell.

olds' basement is always good.

I've done many "transactions" there. The worst part is I thought they were going to be funny, but they were NOT funny. He said something about a law... then he took out the handcuffs.

Luckily I have a really good therapist now to work through the trauma.

I sold 4 Xbox 360s, 3 new one used and never had anyone ask to test it as well as a used Ipod touch. I always would go meet them at a local store like target where they had a video camera just inside the door.

We would always meet just inside the door so at least they were on camera and then we'd walk outside and finish our business outside the store. It made me feel better that I was in a public place and they were also on camera so the cops would have something to look at if they tried anything.

Better to come out to your stuff stolen when all the thief did was open the door than to find your stuff stolen and have a broken window.

I'm on a university campus. It's not a good idea to let people into the dorm (against regs) and to see where you live, your stuff, etc. Usually people sell stuff on CL in a neutral location like on a quad, in front of the chapel, etc. Works out better that way.
