Where on earth is the new Mac Pro?

I'm curious... what's going on with the release of the new Mac Pro? It was supposed to be released around mid December... which is NOW. I was hoping to play with one at my local Apple Store by now, but no luck.

Has the rumor mill come up with any reasons for the delay, like last minute bugs or manufacturing problems?

I have been wondering the same thing myself. I want to check it out in person, and maybe lick it, and need to have the Apple Store check out my iPhone's battery issues, I wanted to roll it into 1 trip.

I'm told we've gotten a couple of these at work for video encoding. Which should speed things up considerably over the old MacPros we have. They haven't been rolled out yet though.

What CPUs are they running? And can you swap out the graphics card in any way?

They're running Xeons.

The GPUs look to be custom solutions that are removable, but once removed it's not like there's anything to replace them.

For $3,000, shouldn't this thing really come with more than 256 GB of storage?
256 GB is plenty for primary storage, but the non-upgradeability of internal components is still a turn off for a "workstation". (Not that I personally need one.)

I am a little curious what kind of gross margins Apple has at the $3000 base model.

Any idea if there'll be an Anandtech review? That's all I want for Christmas. Except a mac pro perhaps.

Of course, we all know Anand auto-slobbers over new Macs now.

I'm intrigued that they've gone for the GPU config they have. Especially as even if we're talking about compact machines and not talking about real workstations (which the Pro no longer is - it's now quite definitively a "housewife-grade workstation", something that was only hinted at with previous Pros), a Dell M6800 with a single K5000M could probably keep up with the D500 model IRL and outperform the D700 model in certain tasks.

As for real PC's, a Z820 will eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and very probably take up less space and be quieter once you've added the requisite accessories and storage to a Pro.

Can a Z820 run 4k streams in real time and do 15 transitions? If the editors on the pc can't do that with the Z820 then it doesn't matter how powerful the Z820 is. The new Mac Pro can seemingly do that from the reviews I've read. It's also scores about as much as the 2012 imac in certain tests or just gets beaten by it lolz. I don't think the 2012 imac can as the new Final Cut Pro I'm guessing is utilising the GPUs a lot?

It seems pricey but if you use FCP a lot then it might be worth it. More so if your job depends on using FCP.

a) Dude, FCP isn't the only 4K NLE out there - though it must look like it sometimes to those who have Apple on the brain. But sure, possibly it's the only one that works for people who would struggle to afford a Pro and would balk at paying up to four figures more for a genuinely good NLE.

b) Dude, video editing isn't the only use for machines like this and GPU's, though again, for those who have their brains in their eyes it's probably the only use that springs to mind. e.g. I can run a GPU and a GPGPU on a Z820. Heck, I can run dual graphics that will toast a Mac Pro in video editing if I was that way inclined, *and* a GPGPU.

Dude, you're getting a Dell.

You clearly have a dislike of Apple, why bother posting to knock the new Pro and show all the people here what an ultra power user you are?

Yeah. Apple seems to think that 4K video editing is the killer app for this system, but how much uncompressed 4K video can you store on 256 GB of storage... An hour perhaps?

I can see pretty looking aluminum drive enclosures with Thunderbolt connectivity becoming popular with Apple fans quickly 🙂

NY Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/26/t...s-new-mac-pro-computer.html?pagewanted=2&_r=0

For the most part, we were able to preview and play the extremely large video files without delay, but when we started to apply multiple filters and color correction, video playback slowed noticeably and Final Cut served up a notice that it was dropping frames from playback.

My friend said he was impressed by the importing speeds and real-time preview, but felt the editing and playback hiccups were similar to what he encountered with his older quad-core Mac Pro tower, to which he has added memory and additional graphics cards for about $2,000. In other words, he didn’t notice a $6,000 difference.

Maybe I'll buy a used one once it gets down to mid 3-digit pricing on the used market. Just like I did with the Cubes.

can the mac pro mine bit coins?

It's got dual AMD video cards, so I'd imagine that it will mine crypto OK with the Asteroid cgminer mod. I'm betting that it would pump out $5 to $15 worth of coin a day depending on the configuration.

It would take forever to recoup your initial purchase cost, though, even if your power was free!
