Where is the "Zone 2" on an Intel P4 Socket 478 motherboard?

Hi all,

Got a friend who has a fairly new Intel socket 478 800mhz fsb motherboard.
(don't know the model number at this moment)
and it's giving zone 2 alarms on the temperature.
It's hitting the 122 F. mark and that's setting off the alarm.

Problem is that I don't know what or where the zone 2 area is.

The processor zone shows to be running around 130 F. and the zone 1 shows
to be running around 105 F.

Anyone have any ideas where the zone 2 is?

Thanks,
Jim

Have you seen what they call a "manual" they put in the
retail boxed Intel motherboards lately? It's in about 6
languages and has nearly no usable information on it.
More handy for a toliet paper wipe than anything else.

Scoured their support website and there is no mention
of where the Zone 1 and Zone 2 temperature detection
areas are.

I wrote them and maybe I'll get an answer back.

Noticed they have a "pay per incident" number you
can call which is a load of horse crap for a board that
is less than 2 weeks old.

I used to like Intel boards but the lack of support is making
me rethink my position as of late.

The Intel active monitor shows

1. Processor Zone
2. Zone 1
3. Zone 2

I can see what the processor temp is but I'm getting
an alarm from time to time about zone 2 and there
is no information at all about where zone 2 is. I'm guessing
there is a sensor at where ever zone 2 is and I'm trying to figure
it out.

that wouldn't be the labeling for the Fan/PS headers on the motherboard would it? Do you even know where Zone 1 is?

Don't flame me because you're in a bad mood and cross-posted your question. The only reason I look at a motherboard manual is for the pinout on the front panel headers.

My guess is Zone 1 is the upper part of the mobo and Zone 2 is the lower part.

Every Intel board I've seen of late has a full manual on the CD that comes with the board. Hopefully the information you need is there.

Sounds as though you need a case fan in the upper rear and/or the PS fan is turning really slow.

By default the fan control (can't remember what Intel calls it) is disabled by default in BIOS. When enabled I've had fans that wouldn't spin up at boot. Not enough current sent to them.

Hope some of this helps.

No flaming MDE.......just don't try cute comments like "check the manual"?
They are a waste of the bandwidth that you feel like you own here on AT. 🙂

To the others who have suggested reasonable ideas:

I've covered the cd that came with the mb and also Intel's desktop mb support
site but they don't cover the definitions of the zones at all.

Maybe Intel support with email me back.

Thanks,
Jim

It wasn't a cute comment, I was serious.

At the time of the post I diidn't know for certain but it's an Intel D865GBFL mb.

So I'm guessing its a 865 chipset.

It's funny that they set up monitoring zones but don't tell you
in their literature where the specific zones are located.

Here is the email I got from Intel support in case anyone is
interested in their suggestion.

The thresholds for both zones were factory set at 120 F. and they say to move them
up to 158 F.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.

System zone 2 is the area between the processor socket and the voltage regulator header connector on your Intel(R)
Motherboard. The system zone 1 is the area near where the system memory slots are on the board itself.

NOTE: It is recommended to set the upper thresholds for the operating temperature in both system zones (1 and 2) up to 70
degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit).

Please do not hesitate to contact us again if you need further assistance.

Sincerely,

Erick B.
