I think the call to Jackson and Sharpton is due largely to the fact that the majority of the images and video that we have seen thus far seem to indicate that the looters are predominantly black...of course, this would make sense considering that the majority of the poverty stricken population living within New Orleans, who were unable to escape the city, are black.
However, as much as I dislike both Sharpton and Jackson, I am not sure how much they could do in this situation as relief workers and authorities have no means of communicating with those trapped in the city...so even if Sharpton and Jackson were to speak directly to the black communities stranded in New Orleans, calling on them not to loot, the message would not get through anyway.
I have no problem with people raiding supermarkets to grab clothing, food, water, medication and other necessities for survival...the instinct to survive is independent of race, and quite honestly, these people need to do what they can to survive under the circumstances...however, seeing other looters grabbing jewelry, electronics and other high value items that are not necessary for survival...this is the lowest form of human behavior.
These images play into prejudices and racism that already exist in our society...similar to how many people responded to the looting that occurred during the Rodney King riots...unfortunately, people will take advantage of situations to their own benefit, and that is a characteristic that is independent of race.
