I went to Mr. Gyro's in Greenwood (Seattle) today and it was most excellent, though I am completely new to the Seattle gyro scene. It did not beat my regional favorite, It's Greek to Me in Tacoma.

Best gyro of the world I still give to a place in The Hague, The Netherlands. I've considered flying back there on a layover on my inevitable pilgrimage to Bursa, Turkey, birthplace of the döner kebab.

Where is the best gyro in your city?

There are two that I've been two in Philly, and both were pretty good... I think it was South Street Souvlaki and Olympia II.

EDIT: I should mention that both were tourist traps seeing as how they're on South Street. However, Olympia II was much better since it's family-owned and there were some legit Greeks working there. SSV just had some hispanics cooking the food.

That one with all the billboards lining the 15 on the way in, next to the big thermometer? Never bothered to stop, is it any good?

for non-greeks, the best you'll find are likely to be served at greek festivals, usually at a church during the summer.

Never heard them called gyros before, interesting. In my current city souvlaki wraps are much more common that kebabs and happily the best one in the city is 3 minutes walk from my flat. In my home town there is a place called Turkish To Go which makes the best kebabs I've ever had. Dozens of new kebab places have opened up to try to cash in on the popularity of Turkish To Go but most of them are out of business within a year.

Edit - oh I just Googled gyros, they're the same as souvlaki wraps.

I think it's pretty good, but the one in buena park is way better. I've had to wait 45+ mins for food at the one in baker (it's called the mad greek now that I remember)

Not worth 45 minute wait, 10 mins tops.

souvlaki is marinated and shishkabobbed chicken, lamb, pork or beef. a gyro has lamb that has been ground, spiced, pressed and roasted on a spit.

Yeah I just read the wiki page, for some reason all of the Greeks around here call gryos souvlaki. Weird.

I never eat gyros, but I eat shawarma all the time from the Babylon Cafe on Robson street. Best I've ever had.

The only places I know of are the stands at the state fair. And nothing has descriptions telling you what things are.

Yeah, Greek food at a state fair won't cut it. You need to find yourself a good Greek or Mediterranean restaurant... you'll be blown away. Make sure you get some stuff with Kalmata olives too. :)

Oh, and Yelp is your friend.

Never? Dude.

In the U.S. it can be hard to find gyros. I had my first one in Vancouver at age 16, after traveling much of the world it seems as weird as someone going 16 years without eating pizza. But there are many areas of America which have not yet been conquered by the gyro.

At my sister's wedding she hired some Greeks to do the catering, it was absolutely incredible. Some of the best food I've ever had.

The food you get at those "Greek" restaurants must suck. I cook it all myself and it tastes better than any of that trash you get and it's cheaper.

yeah, generally i've heard souvlaki refer to any meat in tasty chunky style, but not stew.

Generally, the RTM is pretty good. It tends to be kind of overpriced though.
