WHERE IS PHENOM 2

Im going to look into a crystal ball here:

It performs roughly the same as a C2Q

Still lags behind i7

Will cause price drops of C2Q
 
I expect to wake in the morning to an Anandtech article on the performance of the Phenom 2. We'll see if I am disappointed or not.
 
Competitive with C2Q sounds good to me, as long as it costs less. i7 requires a complete platform change, not really an attractive solution to me right now. Would be nice for the DVR box (my main pc is an E2200 @ 3.2, could use a C2Q if the price was indeed forced downward).
 
seriously why are there so many gaming benchmarks for CPU's? Thats what GPU's are for and they have a much larger effect on gaming experience than any CPU upgrade ever would. Is it really worth it to get 5fps extra? I'm more concerned with how fast the CPU can crunch numbers.
 
It actually performs near what I was expecting, I knew it wouldn't blow C2Q out of the water. It's nice to see the power consumption down on them compared to the current Phenom, also the ability to overclock to 4Ghz should make these really competitive if priced right. I'm wondering what kind of performance increase we could see with the AM3 parts, along with further drop in power consumption since AM3 are expected to be 95watt while the AM2+ in the review are rated for 125watt. Also with more Phenom II X4 and X3 models to release under these in February, along with the Athlon X3 and X4 chips, I wonder how low we'll see the current prices on Phenom X3 and X4 drop since they will remain on the road map for some time yet.
 
Are the triple-core variants being released tomorrow as well? I'm curious as to how much these chips will cost.

I have a feeling the new triple cores will be the best value on the market.
 
I predict Core i7 will just be by itself. While a price war goes on between Phenom II and C2Q. This should make an already low price C2Q, even cheaper.

Yeah, but who needs i7 right now? even a Q6600 is plenty enough for most, even moreso if you overclock it.
 
Hooray for PII! A processor that performs on-par with a 2-year old quad...seriously...why all the hoopla?

For the record, most of the posters here probably need to buy a MB with the processor as they are currently using a P35/P45 or X38/X48 board anyway. Why buy a new processor and board for less than what you could get over the past year? I just don't understand.

Maybe for the people who have a supporting board laying around will pick one up? It would be cheaper than going out and buying an Intel Quad as well as a new motherboard.

I cant wait to see some in depth benchmarks of the phenom on the 9th.

There are many people here like myself who are still stuck with a Socket 939 setup.

The Phenom 2 looks like it will soundly beat the C2Q, and will overclock higher as well.

The i7 is the issue. It looks like the i7 wins 70% of the time by a landslide, and 30% of the time, the Phenom 2 can beat it by a bit.

Overclocked, I think the Phenom 2 will be an excellent chip and a great value.

You're right though. For people with S775 motherboards, it won't make sense to buy a Phenom 2.
 
good to see AMD making incremental improvements. don't look like it'll beat C2Q clock for clock but does admirably.Aslong as they are priced accordingly, they have a market.
 
I just translated the conclusion from that Italian article.

It basically says that the Phenom 2 is 20% faster than the Phenom clock-for-clock, and that it is close to a C2Q, but generally loses.

They say it loses across the board to the i7, and basically that it doesn't look good for AMD, and that the only people that will likely purchase this new chip will be people who already own an AM2+ motherboard.

In my opinion its better than the original C2Q's from 2 years ago. It's a big deal because there will finally be competition to Intel's C2Q's, which will probably result in a price war. This will be a good upgrade for people with AM2+ boards such as myself, and the C2Q price drops will be good for the people currently running C2D's looking to upgrade to quad. I'd bet Quad cores in general from both AMD and Intel will become more affordable.
