I don't know if this question will make much sense, but in very broad terms of where discrete graphics are going, is this the general categorization right now?

ati: games + "image quality" + hardware accelerated playback of HD content + cpu/gpu
nv: games + "physics" + hardware accelerated playback of HD content +cpu/gpu

The only major difference I see right now is Ati is focusing on smaller, cheaper gpu's, and using multiple units for high end products, whereas Nvidia is still making huge, expensive gpu's to increase performance. The other stuff like "gpu physics" is merely marketing drivel at this point, and until the feature gets adopted by major players in the game dev industry, it will remain a marketing buzzword.

I don't think there is a real difference in image quality anymore. Maybe I'm wrong.

As for where nV/AMD are going...only time will really tell.

I am most interested in seeing how the whole raytracing thing goes, as if Intel can get enough onboard with that, we will see some interesting changes in gaming i'd say.
