Thank you for your note. As you may know, our search results change
regularly as we update our index. Normal changes you observe may observe
include images falling out of the index. We realize these changes can be
confusing. However, these processes are completely automated. We currently
include over 880 million images on the web, and it is certainly our intent
to represent the content of the internet fairly and accurately. Thanks for
taking the time to write.

The Google Team

make sense?

Thanks for the reply.
About updating the index, how does that work exactly?
For example if I search for "Lynndie England" in the google web search
I come up with for example this page as a second result.
Which is a page about her. The images used have her name in the filename.
There are also countless of other webpages which are similar. How can
images then fall out of index? doesnt the image bot use the same data
as the web bot?

now waiting for a reply

Anyone know where I can find a larger version of this pic? Or large war pictures in general. This is my original thread over in OT about it.

Exactly.

They are obviously working under the direction of the current Administration, they have been trained well.

Is there any proof these pictures were indexed before?

After reading the Slashdot thread it seems that the picture index stays about 6 months behind current events.

For example, there are not yet any pictures from the national conventions indexed; search for "zell miller convention" or "obama convention" for instance.

Hi all,

We posted an official response here on slashdot
on slashdot

(and other places :)

But in short, it is a database age issue. As to the China thing, well, we can talk about that at a later day, I'm still kind of new at google and while it has been explained to me, I don't feel comfortable talking about that yet.

merkinofbaphomet, can you send me a private message so I can follow up with what you saw? I'm doing a follow up story about this -- but your profile isn't visible so I can contact you.

Nice to see some chatter on this issue. While I am not completely satisfied with the current answer, it is nice to see Google take an interest in the issue, assuming Mr. Di Bona is who he says he is (and I have no reason to suspect one way or the other).

Klah: I do not have any proof that the images were in the Google index. Had I known they were about to go missing (which is obviously impossible), I would have taken some screen shots. I was working on a project and had been using Google Image Search excusively when I first noticed the issue.

Looking forward to more discussion.
