I would be more concerned with, are you going to be approved for a regular unsecured credit card?

If you haven't had a credit card in good standing for more than 12 months I wouldn't even bother trying.

You should contact your bank and apply for a SECURED CREDIT CARD and dump your current cc.

christ, like I dont get enough of those in the mail
Chase sends out a lot of those things as do most cc companies, but I have never seen one promoting Continental Airlines. The Continental card is the best cc I have, not only do I have a low fixed interest rate, but I gain miles on every purchase. 10x miles for restaurant purchases. It is helpful since I fly a lot.

I use MBNA, and I love them. They used to have the Sprint rewards for calls. However, Sprint withdrew the collaboration. I still have my free points that I use to make long distance calls, but it expires this december. So I don't know if MBNA still offers the free points reward of any kind.

Uhmmmm . . . other than that, I don't know. I have rejected all other MasterCard offers I got, esspecially Chase. I would have accepted the offers if I didn't have MC already. If you have to choose between Citibank, Chase and others, here's my advice: Don't take Citibank. And please, don't be foolish enough to accept MC offers from Capital One. Hope that helps!

The best free card in the business. It's like a free United/Continental/Midwest airline card all rolled into one. Plus you can use the points for Amtrak travel and a host of other merchants. Check out their REWARD CHART.

I dont really like any of the reward programs, or I wouldnt use them that much. I think im gonna get a UW mastercard to help support my university. Thanks for the links though.

One should avoid at all costs to use points with Continental. It is universally acclaimed by people in the know that the points are ridiculously difficult to redeem.

The best way to use Continental points is to upgrade your seat to Business Class. IMHO, this is a luxury and a waste of miles that could have gone for a free seat.

BTW, FWIW, the MBNA Amtrak card allows points that are already in your Continental FF account to be transferred to Amtrak account. From there, they can be used in any way you like. What I did is transfer my points to United. At least United is GREAT with free tix redemption!

Well, there are cash back reward cards as well.

Might as well get some free money back from CC use, no?........

Listen, Gobadgrs: I would take Rossman's advice about not applying for another card at the moment. Take your time and build something with the VISA card you have already. Then you'll even have offers flying to you.

If you do this hasty application thing 'cuz you don't like your VISA account, you'll be suffering worse than you anticipated. Your credit history will be bruised and you'll hardly get much offers or approved unsecured credit cards.

Stick with what you have for at least 6 months. And even if you do decide to settle for MC, at least keep your VISA account active too (even though not with so much spending). You're an interesting individual the way you deal with finance. Uhmm. . . . I always find it ironic when Business/Finance majors seem to be the ones with the biggest trouble in managing.

I have typed pages and pages of advice to him via PM and he seems receptive.

However he's not going to listen to good advice or reasoning, so I give up.

Good advice if this is the plan to build favorable credit history.

That's not true. Finance majors are very good with their money. That is all they think about all day--how to preserve wealth! ;)

I am listening, I'm just trying to calm myself down at the moment so I don't make any knee jerk reactions cause I'm pissed. The bill will get paid off in full today, and then I'll wait a week or so before I charge anything else because I don't want any other "magical" fees to show up. As much as I want a different card right now, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to run out and get one just because the CC company I deal with are a bunch of bastards, so I'll quietly sit and bide my time for a few months until I can get a new card and cancel the current crappy one that I have.
