if you want a good solid desk go with 2 of the 2 drawer filing cabinets, then get a solid undrilled door and bolt it to the tops of the cabinents.
I built my own desk using some legs left over from a cheapy desk (but the legs were metal and pretty solid so I could reuse them) and got a Desktop from a office supply place nearby my palce that sells scratch and dent stuff very cheap (almost perfect 3x8ft lament top for 15 bucks)
there was someone on here that had a neat idea for their 37" westy...i cant remember who it was though...anyways, he/she had the monitor on a normal TV stand and then had a rolling desk w/ keyboard and mouse on it...i thought that was cool...but i'm really looking for something where i can keep my PCs next to me...
Ikea... most of their stuff is so modular you can customize it to exactly what you need. Most stuff is cheap, but super modular (i.e. what you want) might be a bit pricey.
Follow Hot Deals, "Obese Billfold", SD and other such deal sites. Staples, Office Depot and Office Max regularly discount out some damn fine comp desks at insanely low prices.
I got a garage full of 'em. Stop me before I buy again!
$170 Rosewood computer desk ensemble, OOS on-line, being clearanced by Staples stores for $12.50. Call 1-800-Staples or any of their other 800 numbers to check for your local store availability.
As always with these offers, YMMV and time is of the essence. But offers like these happen with a fair amount of regularity at Staples, OD, and OM. Good luck!
Try looking for estate auctions and liquidation auctions from companies that are going out of business. You can get some NICE stuff cheap that way. Why settle for pine and particle board stuff from Ikea, when you get a used Oak or Mahogany desk for the same price? Who knows, maybe you'll get lucky and get the Herman Miller Aeron chair that the boss used to sit in as well
