I went to a zales outlet in florida and got a $500 Wittnauer watch for a little over $200. It was an awesome deal in my opinion and they had a lot of other jewlery, including engagement rings, for much less then you would pay in a normal store. If you can find one then check it out.

If you really want to impress her and you know her tastes ( this comes from looking at rings a little bit with her - you can look without letting on that you're actually going to buy it right away, if you want to surprise her), pick out a ring style and diamond style, cut, clarity, etc. by yourself. I know if may be cheaper online, but it's very helpful to have someone at a local store you can deal with and have the ring adjusted, clean, and maintained. I found a place where he helped me find exactly the design I was looking for and he explained everything about diamonds (cut, clarity, color, etc) and let me examine all of the diamonds under the scope to see which one looked better. This ring had one center stone and two side stones, and since he didn't like the way the side stones looked with the center diamond, he upgraded them for free because he wanted the ring to look its best.
I think you'll find that the smaller, local jewelers will be more willing to help you find what you need a reasonable price and they also take a lot of pride in their work (more than the large jewelry chains, at least). Now, if all your g/f cares about is the size of the diamond on the ring, then I guess you can forgot all of what I just said and buy the cheapest diamond that's a reasonable quality online. My fiancee is more into elegance than size, so take that for what it's worth, too. Hope this helps.

ok, i am in the same position. i was looking online not for a place to buy, but to learn more. man i didn't know there was so much to learn.

first, start here

PRICESCOPE

they have lots of good info, and even sell tools to check out diamonds. if i am going to spend $25k on a diamond, i'll spend $35 on that little idealscope they sell. they also have a pricewatch for diamonds, so you can get a feel for prices and such.

also, their forum - PRICESCOPE FORUM

lots of people there buy online, and they recommend several good places to buy from. prices there are much cheaper, and a lot of vendors post on there, offering expert advicce. read 3 pages in that forum, and you will know more than you ever wanted to. one good place that people on there seem to recommend a lot, is GoodOldGold. ive seen pics of beautiful diamonds purchased from there, and i think you are in luck, they are in the south shore of Long Island.

Crank, NiceIce is actually mentioned in the forum over at pricescope, and recommended too. i think the owner of NIceICe posts in that forum quite often.

good luck!

We sure do, a "girlfriend" is one of your hands, correct? Depending on if you are left handed or right?

Its been awhile, but I still remember buying a ring at the same time one of my friends bought his. He went to a local store with his GF and they picked out a ring. I went to the jewelry district in Los Angeles, and spent an afternoon asking questions and haggling. I paid about 1/3 of what he did, and when we got together and his GF shows mine her ring, then mine shows her, her ring. Heh, it wasn't a pretty sight, our diamond was like twice the size of theirs and had a sparkle that dazzled. He was like totally humiliated, and the joke was his ring might actually appraise for more than mine, but we spent our money on different factors.

Investment, baloney. Investment grade diamonds are like 5 to 15 carats and even wholesale have hefty price tags. They have to keep the transaction cost small compared to the value, otherwise nobody would invest or trade diamonds.

I wanted a big flashy diamond that would knock my GFs socks off (actually not socks), and didn't give a rats but about how it might look under a loop, or how much I might be able to sell it for down the line if things messed up.

Know exactly what you want, take cash, and visit the diamond district in Manhatten.

Dont get married if your main reason is, "It's been 6 years....the woman is getting pissed if i dont ask her soon"

Please.

Divorce sucks for everybody but lawyers.

About the only really good reason to get married is that you want and are ready to have kids.
