Why on earth would you buy something like that on a hot deal? I'm all for getting a good deal, but you come off as "I haven't spent money on a ring for 6 years, so I want to get out cheap 'cause just so I can get some lovin' in the next few days."

Try the trunk of the car parked on the corner of the street downtown.

Last, congrats for getting 6 years under your belt. Many have received less time for violent felonies :D

It would be best to buy a diamond at some place where you can look at it first. Good Luck!!!

I crossed that 7yr mark last month- And know exactly what you are going through.
I recently took the plunge and bought THE Ring earlier this year at the Gem show - Its like the Boat/Gun show where various jewelers - Many of them wholesalers go so sell their stuff. Their should be a Gem and Jewelry show every few months in your neck of the woods. Its a good place to see many jewelers and comparison shop.
Basically the local Jewelry stores in the mall are over priced and sell lower quality diamonds- then what you can get from other jewelers.
Pick a reputable Jeweler as well - if possible- The longer they have been in business - the more peace of mind you will have with your purchase.

Also - you can check www.bluenile.com to get started and find out what you can afford.

The engagement ring was one of the most difficult purchases I have ever made since jewelry has little personal value to me. I tried to explain to my Fiance how diamonds are unjustifiably priced (thanks in part to Debeers marketing). as well as the political turmoil resulting from the sale/trading of diamonds - but it was no use.

Good luck!

Do a search in off-topic. I found a couple of good threads there a while ago, but you may need to search the archived threads.

I feel for ya. It will be 7 years for me and my GF come August. About that time here too.

lotust, try Dimend in Chicago. Isaac Gottesman seems to be a fine gentleman and will work with you to get the best quality and cut for the money. His workmanship is excellent. I trusted him to make a nice ring for my wife (for our 10th) and it turned out great. Definitely would do business with him again.

What about a pawn shop??
If you can find someone who's an expert to go with you, you can get some real deals on jewelry. I know that's it's not cool looking, but I'd rather have 3x the stone for the same $.
Another idea is the newspaper or estate sales. Paying retail for jewelry is outrageous!!

I know.. it takes all romance away.. :p

DirtCheapDiamonds.com

Yeah, sounds bad...but in reality it is top quality for a great price. Service is excellent, as you talk directly with the owner. Ships with a GIA cert (industry standard). Had the diamond I bought there appraised at a local jeweler for well over double what I paid. Buy the diamond online, have it put in a setting someplace local.

Do not buy from anywhere that does not offer a GIA or EGL cert...and for piece of mind get it appraised locally (if anything to match the stone with its cert).

Wow. I feel better. I've been dating the same woman for 6-1/2 years, too. I thought I was the only one! People at work look at me funny when I tell them. Good to have company!

Good luck. We're in different boats. I'm actually pressuring her. Or at least dropping hints. Her friends don't harass me. They harass her!

Got my wife's diamond at NiceIce. Cheesy name, incredible prices and service.
There's a ton of information about diamonds on their site, so it's a good place to start. If you have any questions, just e-mail them, and they'll answer right away.
Can't say enough nice things about these guys.
Also, they're in Oregon, so you don't have to pay any sales tax...that can save you a significant amount of cash.

Good luck!
