I think the hot deals are fine. Ya sure they are not giving away stuff for free. But there have been tons of stuff that was great price. Maybe you just expect to much. I have almost 4 garages full of hardware from good deals i find and cant resist.

If you can't find a hot deal, you aren't looking hard enough.

Well, the golden days of the dot com bubble are past and Bing CashBack is over, but there are still deals. I bought a pair of M Audio AV 40 speakers that retail for $150 for $120 on Wednesday, just from checking on Bens Bargains (don't judge me, it's an easy site to scan through quickly). I was pretty happy when I saw them because I was getting ready to just buy them at retail price because of their good reviews.

Edit: oh, and woot sucks now, too :(

I've noticed "deals" at costco and other discount stores aren't really that great lately either. I swear all of the stores increased their prices by about 40% since last year... And then have weekly "deals" on crap you really don't need

I dunno - my definition of a hot deal is something I can get at a discounted price and immediately resell it for at least a 20% profit (eBay, craigslist, etc).

Recently got an EVGA GTX 470 video card for $234. But yes, overall, not as many hot deals as like before.

The point of the thread is that there are deals but that the deals of about 6 to 10 years ago were just mind boggling. I remember an Okidata laser printer that went for $550 and had $800 rebates on it. There was a limit of 5.

Math:

5 printers at $550 each:

$2,750

5 x 4 ($200 each) rebates at $800 (total) each:

$4,000

=

5 printers and $1,250 in cash (yes, this was done by more than one but I was too afraid).

Deals were just thrown right and left a few years ago trying to lure people in. Many companies ended up going under from being stupid about it.

$800 rebate? Or $800 in rebates? That's incredible.

$1250 in cash, and flooding ebay screwing the vendor selling them.

This lead to the rebate strangulation of today.

Much like Costco's "free laptop program every 6 months."

Probably one of the reasons that we see fewer "hot" deals these days.

People will abuse the system and take what they can ...

I just bought a Dell 1320c color laser printer, with network interface for $99 at Staples.

I went into the store looking to pick up a color laser printer and noticed that they had this printer for $129.00, regularly $249.00 even at Dell.com today.

They checked in the back and had one left and when I checked out, it rung up at $99.00. They checked the price again and said that it was correct, so I scored a hell of a deal on a color laser printer. Hell, $99.00 is less than a lot of inkjet printers!

As posted, it was 4 - $200 rebates = $800 total on each printer. There were quite a few people at Bargainshare that did the deal. One even sold 4 of the printers for $800 each on eBay and ended up with a free printer and $4,450 in cash (I shit you not).

That's Capitalism for you. Rebates were a problem anyway as so many were being offered without cross-checking and also rebate houses scamming people as much as they could (throwing away rebates, lying about them, etc).

Bottom line is that companies bit off more than they could give away in the name of e-commerce and it came back to bite them back.

Here's where my 2008 Stimulus check went. Got it for $202.47+tax each at Sears (clearance-July 2008). :p
Almost 3 year old camera technology by that time I bought them. Sold for >$800 when it came out late 2005.
This was like looking for a needle in a haystack deal for me, but I lucked out that the Sears 5 miles away had them,
almost none in the Region/District. Ended up giving all of them as gifts.
