Where have all the good cases gone?

Hi guys,

It's been about 3 years since I've built my current system, and following the July 22nd Intel CPU price cuts I've decided that it's that time again. The thing is that I just went through every $150-$300 case offered on newegg and a few other sites, and I'm rather disappointed by how little quality there is out there. I'm hoping that maybe someone here can point me to something I haven't seen yet.

The nature of the problem is very simple - I'm looking for a clean, elegant case, that doesn't act as a vacuum cleaner (i.e. suck up dust), yet has a good balance between cooling and sound properties. These requirements seem to eliminate 99% of everything that is out there, and yet I don't think they are unrealistic since 3 years ago I remember having a number of options.

For the clean and elegant part... Dear god! What are the case designers doing? The only cases that I like for their visual qualities are lian-li, I want something minimalist, but lian-li has some other problems that I'll get to in a second.

Vacuum cleaners is the next point. Why are there still cases being designed that don't put filters on all intake fans (in my price range that is)? I really don't understand this; even cases in the $300 range often have nothing to stop dust from getting in.

Cooling and sound - these are often mutually exclusive I understand that, but still, where's the balance? Some cases (for example, Lian-Li PC-V2100 PLUS II) have given up on good cooling completely, while others (Cooler Master) are just building cases out of mesh.

Needless to say, I'm rather disappointed at my options for the next case. I would have loved to buy a good Lian-Li for about $250 or so, but having gone through their site I can't find a single case that I like. Some have no cooling, others don't bother with dust, yet others have their motherboards upside down. What in the world is up with this new design? I'm not even talking about the fact that many motherboards with heatpipes are not going to benefit from being mounted upside-down (quite the opposite), but even if that wasn't the case, I just don't see the point.

Below I've listed more specific requirements that I have for the case. I would greatly appreciate any advice you guys can give me, because right now I'm leaning towards reusing my old thermaltake. It has a few problems, but it still seems to be better than anything I've seen.

So the general requirements are:
1. Absolutely no lights or transparent windows. In fact, I would love a black box that doesn't even look like a computer case.
2. Good balance between cooling and sound, with a filter on each intake fan.
3. A door covering the CD and floppy slots to block dust.
4. No upside-down motherboard.
5. Space for at least 4 hard drives that are cooled. They have to be mounted horizontally, and preferably facing outward.
6. Would prefer aluminum, but not as important.

My current thermaltake case covers just about all of those points, but it's not as clean as I would like (even though I removed all the lights), and if I use it I'll have to take apart my current system. In the past I've also used Antec, who used to have some good cases and now seem to be selling total junk. Lian-li has a lot cases that are very close to what I need, but each one has one or two major flaws that eliminates it for me.

Any tips on where else I should look?

Personally, I think the Antec Sonata II is a decent case for the price. I have a Sonata I and it meets pretty much all of your requirements: 4 hdds in a seperate rack just behind the optional 120mm intake fan mount, removable, washable filter in front of the intake fan, door covering 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" drive bays, 120mm exhaust fan, virtually silent, easy to work with (drive rails and thumb screws), aluminum, normal mobo mount, and a clean, unassuming glossy black finish.

I think that's everything and all for only $99 or so, less with rebate from time to time.

Welcome to the AT forums.

case-mods has a long list of case mfrs. but there isn't anything under most of them. You might like the Chenbro SR10568 at http://www.ewiz.com et al. If it lacks standard filters, they wouldn't be hard to add (just cut some AC filter foam.

Well then..your general requirements basically just described the P180 (P180b if you literally want a black box ;) ) I bought this case and its my first build too. It's been pretty good actually. It's got three fans (and two more mounts for additional fans) included which blow air out..so no "vacuum" cleaner. Also, all the intakes behind the front case door have filters that are easy to take out. The only downside to the case is that it's kinda pricey.

They've also come out with special editions if you're into the "mirror" effect on your case sides. haha

p180/p190 seems good. i've had quite a few of the antec nsk series and i'd say the only decent one is the microatx , the atx ones are pretty shoddily built given the price.

you might want to look at the sonata 3 if its out yet or the antec solo a well.

Thanks for all the tips. As far as antec goes, I used to have one of their original performance series cases. It was ok, not a case I'd like to buy again, the current p180 and others seem to be an extension of that. With Antec I don't really like the build quality, but the thing that bothers me about current Performance One cases are those ventilation holes on the sides of the front panel. They put a filter on the front fan, but these holes will instantly fill with dust, which I find to be a rather poor design. This is also a problem with several Lian-li cases. I have a fairly small room, and the only place I can put my case is on the floor which has carpet. You can see the problem - in just a few days there is a ton of dust flying in.

I decided to take another stroll through Lian-li's site, and I would say the case that comes closest to what I want is PC-A70B. It doesn't cover the external drives, and I also can't find it anywhere for sale. The review listed on their site states that the case will be available in 2 months, and that was posted a month ago. Since I'm not going to be buying anything until the end of this month anyway, this might be an option. They also have PC-A71, which has those same holes on the side. With PC-A70B, if I can tune the fans to make sure that the volume of air going in is greater than what is sucked out (i.e. no vacuum in the case), then the exposed drives are not such a big problem. I wish they put half a door on that case to keep the fans clear, but cover external drives... oh well.

I'll keep looking for any new cases that come out between now and then, but my original point remains. What happened to all the manufacturers out there? Most of the cases seem like they were designed by 13 year-olds with lights and flashes everywhere, and are generally of very poor quality. A bit sad I think.

i agree... its tough to find a case now that is welll built with actual 1mm steel, doesnt have 5000 lights and chrome on it etc.

a lot of people here love those cases with windows and 15 fans, and such ... the whole country has just lost its sense of taste i think.

or peoplel iek you and i are boring.

Check out the Silverstone SST-TJO5-B - it seems to meet your specs - the only place I found that has the basic model (w/o window and Eudemon fan/temp display) was http://www.case-mod.com for only $115. - a lot of case for that money. Here's the link to Rodney's video review: http://www.3dgameman.com/content/view/257/103/

Raise your case at least 7 or 8 inches off the floor - reduces dust attraction quite a bit. I use Rubbermaid stepstools under mine.

Or if you aren't averse to spending a lot less, take a look at the Rosewill R5601 or 5604 Black on Newegg - I reviewed the 5604 here:. And then there are the Maxtop server cases at http://www.Arrowmax.com or http://www.servercase.com .

Newegg now has the latest CoolerMaster 830evo with a CoolerMaster 1K Real Power Pro power supply on sale for $429. with next day shipping $148.02 Mine just came an hour ago.I already own the same case and a CoolerMaster 850W Real Power Pro and have never had a single problem.I own two highend rigs,my 2nd rig is in a Gigabyte 3D Aroura, but the case gets to damm hot. and just to tight to work in.Thats the reason for buying this case.Plus the 830 is one of the best cases for air flow, and lots of room.Even with two 8800GTX's i still have close to 4" between the cards and HDD cage. Both the 850w and 1K come with all cables sleeved right to the end, even the HDD cables.

Might want to take a look at some of Silverstone's cases. Their aesthetic style is quite similar to Lian-Li, so that's a plus, but I haven't really researched into their cases very much. Some of the Temjin cases look really great, though.

My personal choices (on the high end) are the silverstone tj09 and aska eclipse-62 (note that i dislike doors over the drives :) )
