Where have all the barbers gone?

I just want a freakin' haircut! Not that I have enough hair to matter. It takes them 2 mins to take the electric shaver and shave my head. I occasionally do it myself but it always comes out better if someone else does it.

Only places I have in my area are Supercuts, and various other clones. Between the cut then the tip it ends up costing me over $17.

mine costs $8 w/ tip. my barber down the street incrementally went from $6 to now $10 over the past 13 years ive been going there. finally i said something when it reached $10 a couple weeks back and he said since i was a loyal customer he would only charge me the price that i originally paid when i first went there. speaking of which, gotta go back this week.

There's a nice old barber shop near where I live. They still use a straight razor to finish up on the neck, sideburns, and around the ears.

Barber around here costs me $7

I have never tipped a barber...wtf is up with tipping a barber? Never seen that done. Tips are for waiters.

same for my barber, but he's kind of sold out lately. instead of using that brush with the powder on it to wipe away the excess hair, he now uses this little hair vacuum device to suck up the stray hairs.

my cousin was the same way. then one day he "accidentally" got his ear clipped enough to make it bleed. he reconsidered the whole concept of not tipping shortly thereafter.

I've never had a barber do that.

Yep, got a couple of fine barbers around here that do the same. Old-fashioned and great.

Sadly, though, once these old barbers hang it up, there won't likely be anyone to replace them.

I am black. I go to the barber shop at least 1 time every 2 weeks. I also change my cut depending on the time of year. South Side fade in the summer, tapered in the winter.

The barbershop I go to has the same kind of feel as the one I went to in austin. Gotta go into a ol' skool neighborhood for a good cut. I really like all the jabbering, talking about sports, or the kids that are "comin up" in the area. Each barber is different, and if you want to go to one of the super star guys at the shop, you have to wait, or be in the know. Also no good haircut ends without someone cleaning up your edges with a straight razor, doing your eyebrows with the trimmer, and a little brush off work to make sure you don't leave the shop with some hair in your ears, or on your cheeks. Definately love when they pop the chairs with their smocks, to make sure everyone knows the cut is over. So everyone in the shop can check it out.

I hate super cuts, and any shop like that. It takes the country club, guy thing out of the barber shop. I need that to make my week or 2 complete. That is why I go, the cut is just a value add. $10-$15 out the door.

seriously? i tthought everyone tips the barber.. i pay $11 w/ tip

I finally found a barbershop here after going to the one on base, which absolutely sucks. $11 with tip. I always tip, unless the cut is really bad. This new guy doesn't use a straight razor, but he definitely knows how to give a high and tight.

Ironically, the best haircuts I have ever received were from a little Japanese woman named Michiko at the Officers' Club at Kadena Air Base, Japan. I went to her for three years, and she NEVER made one mistake. Plus, I could get my haircut wearing a white suit (not that I own one) and not have a single hair on it when I left. To top it off, the haircut was $8 with tip.

Funny, I was just at the local barber Friday and he was asking the same question. As far as he said, I guess no one's training to be a Barber any more, especially since it's a self-employment job that doesn't come with insurance or any of the other perks of an office job.

We have no more people being barbers...it's all Cosmetologists or Hair Stylists, etc.
