I have a 80 gig hard drive (74.1 gigs recongized) and I use it to store my linux iso's(cough), mp3's bought from the internet (cough), and a back up for another smaller hard drive. It says I have used 68.4 gigs of it, but when i added up all the folders (including hidden ones, which were none) on the drive it only comes out to about 50 gigs. Where has the ~18 gigs gone to?

I meant the space that is allocated for it ie. 10%.

Also partitions and are you adding the size or size on disk.

Well Windows XP isnt on this hard drive, its on my other (20gig). I purged the Norton recycling bin and that free up about a gig, so that brings me to about ~17 gigs missing. I added up the size on disk by the way.

When you added it all up, did you disable "Hide Protected Operating System Files" in folder options?
It may not have taken that into account when totalling the files.

I disabled hide proctected operating system files and a folder called "recycler" came up that is taking up 6 gigs. Inside it has a bunch of recycling bins. Is it safe to delete?

Dang...that's a lot of reading material to sort through. :p

Are you sure you emptied your Bin?
If there's stuff in them, (them? only one in mine...) it's supposed to be the contents of your Bin.
Try emptying them like you would the normal Recycle Bin.

btw...just out of curiousity. Looking at that screenshot; What theme is that? or is that something like windowblinds?

I found a good program a while back from JGoodies.. it scans all the folders and makes a graph showing where space is being taken up and how much. Check it out at jgoodies.com

I am using Style XP with the Longhorn theme.

Run scandisk, or if Win2k/XP, chkdsk on the drive and see if that clears it up. Is the drive FAT32?

Treesize. Go to google, find it. It is very nice for figuring out exactly where size is taken up.

Doesnt matter... if system restore is enable for the disk, it will be eating up a lot of space... the default size for system restore is 12% of the total partition size or 80 * .12 = 7.2 gigs. Make sure you turn it off under the my computer properties. Try defragging as well. The other problem could be what file system you are using. NTFS is a lot better for file storage size than fat 32. I work at teh govt and we have a ton a map files that people are working on. To give you an example, one guy couldn't get all the data on an 80 gb hd that was formatted in fat32 where another coworker who had his hd formatted in ntfs could. Im talking about gigabytes of wasted space due to cluster size....

Anyways, check that system restore, and try defragging your drive too....you dont have any page files or scratch space on that partition/hd do you?
