I noticed when in Western Canada that it poutine was found but with somewhat rarity.

Where else does poutine exist?

For those that have no idea what I'm talking about, poutine is a concoction of french fries, cheese curds, and sauce. not quite sure how to describe the sauce but it varies obviously from one place to the next.

That's the basic poutine. Some places go a little further and you can order what they call "italian" poutine which is just a poutine with spaghetti sauce.. not crazy about that one.

Where I work, there's a place that sells a poutine but they also offer one that comes with bacon, sausage and bits of ham. It's quite good.

That is all.
 
My BC and Nova Scotia friends both talked about it as college years drunk food. Like after the party people would head out to find poutine carts\shops.
 
HAHA yeah gravy not sauce ... whatever lol.. yeah sauce does sound wrong 😛

I stopped at a McD once close to the Ont/Que border and they didn't even know what a poutine was. Didn't understand how that could be ..

It is not a health food that's for sure! A good one is definitely tasty though. I'm not huge on junk food or fast food but this would definitely be one of my favorites.
 
It is gravy for sure ... you can find it where there are prominent French Canadian communites. Northern Alberta festivals that have anything French attached always seem to have a poutine stand 🙂 Middle of winter, get a steaming hot styrofoam cup of poutine ... hmmmm tasty. I don't live up north anymore, but once a year at a French Carnivale festival we'd enjoy some after much drinking and dancing.
 
the American version is basically chilli cheese fries. Delicious.
Poutine seems strange. What kind of gravy/sauce is it?
 
you should be able to get it at any Harvey's Hamburger place.

lots of places sell it here in London, Ontario.
 
I can confirm it is available in Vermont. Its availability increases the further north you go. My wife grew up near the border and it was actually a semi regular item available for school lunch.
 
It's not real poutine unless the cheese curds squeak when you press on them. Most places outside of Quebec don't have true poutine, but it's even worse in the US where they have no clue how to make fries appetizing, and actually top their fries with nacho or american cheese. Good god.

Best fast food franchise poutine I would say is New York Fries. There's still a fair number of places in western Canada that has good poutine but they are typically mom and pop shops.
 
I'm in Maine and our restaurants serve poutine but it is literally french fries and brown gravy everywhere I've gone.
 
They have a Fritz fry house near my house and they have a couple of different varieties of poutine there. I've only ever tried it once (not a huge fry guy) but it was pretty good IIRC.

it's here, too (Alberta), and it's nasty as hell. i can't even look at it.

what ever happened to just fries 'n ketchup?
 
Something that could be considered similar to this is "Aussie Fries" from Outback Steakhouse. Basically it's fries covered in like three different types of melted cheese and sprinkled with a ton of bacon bits and sausage. It's freaking delicious!
 
Mmmm poutine! I could totally go for one, like right now.

And think most of Canada has it. Ontario has a lot. There's at least like 10 places in my city that have it, and that's not counting restaurants and fast food places that may serve it as well as a side dish.
