Where does BET draw the line as to what artist's music to play?

Heres my perception of it, a black entertainment channel is not prejudice, because they're main intention is putting black people on tv? or is inteded for a black audience? I was readin an article in my newspaper, about some black rapper turned cowboy, and he is pretty much singing or "rapping" to rock instrumentals, but throws off a country theme. BET wont play him, but CMT will, and even though his song is #1 on the country charts, and probably list worthy to be played on BET. Isnt BET descriminating against there own race. Say Stevie wonder and.... Kelly clarkson make a song, would bet play it? i think so. But what if, Neil diamond and brandy made a song, i doubt BET would play it. They should just rename themselves to the Urban/hiphop stationt. UHH

Why would a channel put on anything that its target demographic won't watch?

BET is not about giving exposure to any or all black people. It's about providing entertainment to its target audience. That's all.

ok. So their main intention, is to appeal to a black audience. I thought it was to get black people on tv, as long as they do something entertaining.

Yah. BET is not a public service, nor is Lifetime. It's all about entertaining a target demographic in order to sell the most products and services to them through advertisements. That is how I understand it.

No, that would be retarded.

its because BET doesn't have any type of country music show. all the music videos you see on there aren't just random videos with black people in them. they are on shows like "106 and Park" or whatever, which is about hip hop. Same when they have countdowns, they are just hip hop stuff. as far as their musical selection on BET goes, its all geared towards hip hop. you won't even see women like whitney houston or tina turner in their music videos.

and a little on topic, i saw that dude on jay leno last week (his name is Troy something) and i could not stop laughing at this guy. it was just hilaroius to watch him.

as another poster pointed out...
the same reason you wouldn't see women's roller derby, or mud wrestling on lifetime, sure women are in it but it doesn't appeal to their target demographic.

It's not in their best interest to show successful black people or black people that sing country. It's only "cool" if those black people are in the ghetto and rapping, preferrably if they've been shot numerous times.

I love hip hop but unfortunately you're right. It's "cool" to be thuggish and sell drugs or boast that you used to. Great role model for the kids watching these guys.

I should also note here that they do not show any of the underground hip hop guys that point out how retarded that rap is.
