Aren't you supposed to have it in the car?

You keep the registation information in the car, but you never keep the title in the car. If someone were to steal your car, then they would forge the title to show that they are now the owner of the car.

Oh, I never knew that.

Yep

If I had a free & clear car title I would keep it at my bank's safety deposit box (which I don't have one - although I should).

But what if you sell your car on a Sunday at 3PM? You are leaving town, the buyer is willing to pay OVER your asking price but demands the title be signed over to them? You're screwed (although you could offer a bill of sale).
There is no such thing as a friendly DMV office. That place is hell on earth and there is no way to get anything done in one trip... :|

I never recall saying the DMV was friendly ;)

Here in Portland, Oregon it's take a number wait an hour hell. The DMV employees are reasonably helpful and friendly.

This is very true. Last month, I went there to get my license chaged from Texas to Louisiana. I had to have an offical birth cirtificate, my texas drivers license, vehicle registartion, insurance card, and my social security card. I had to dirve back to Texas to get birth cirtificate. I lost my SS card like 10 years ago, so I had to wait an hour at the SS office to get a new one. Finally, I had to wait over an hour at the DMV. When it was finally my turn, I had to wait for the guy to type my information in using only two fingers. You would think that somone that spent all day typing would learn how to use at least four fingers.

You, waiting in line, only need one finger to solve that...

Hell no. The registration should be in the car, but the title should be stored somewhere safe, it's what entitles you to own the car!

I said that. . . It was a joke. But I've needed to get a duplicate title mailed out on a few occasions, and while there was a small fee (IIRC, $9 in MN), it was never a big deal.

Oh yeah, in one trip, I got a duplicate title for one car, transfered another car into my name, AND renewed my drivers license. And I took a number and waited less than 5 minutes! Not bad, although a short wait like that is the exception rather than the rule.
