Where do you store a car title?

Never in the car! If the car is ever stolen, I'll just say that the recovery process could be more complicated if the car is no longer even registered to you.

A filing cabinet in your home is fine. There is no need for a safe deposit box if you don't have one, since the document is easily replaced by filling out a form at your friendly DMV office.

Oh, I never knew that.

Yep

If I had a free & clear car title I would keep it at my bank's safety deposit box (which I don't have one - although I should).

But what if you sell your car on a Sunday at 3PM? You are leaving town, the buyer is willing to pay OVER your asking price but demands the title be signed over to them? You're screwed (although you could offer a bill of sale).

There is no such thing as a friendly DMV office. That place is hell on earth and there is no way to get anything done in one trip... :|
