Where do you hide money?

Yet another post inspired by 25th Hour. Where would you hide money if you didn't want anyone finding it? For the rainy day if it ever came. If you had to take off and then years later, still be able to get that money under a different name. Where would you hide it? A Swiss bank? Can it be traced?

Currently, in my wallet.

If I really wanted to hide it.. hmmm. I'm not sure. Maybe in a thick book on my bookshelf?

My uncles knows someone who keeps lots of money in his safe at home. Lots meaning not a billion, just a reasonable amount.

Swiss accounts no longer offer the anonymity that they once did. Being in Alaska, it is easy enough to find a plot of land that will be undisturbed for extended periods of time, use a GPS unit to read the coordinates of where I bury it, then go back and get it later.

Ooh. :D

What would you store it in to make sure it didn't get wet and was unaffected by the elements for extended periods of time?

The one solid idea so far. But this is something you'd do only IF you knew you were in danger. A Swiss account is something you could put money in for a rainy day even if you're not expecting anything. But like you said, they're not the same anymore.

Vacuum pack the bills in plastic using one of those Food Saver or other similar devices, it protects them from moisture as well as compressing the bills, allowing you to fit more of them into a hermetically sealed container.

I once had a fake wall outlet which the screw would lock it in the wall. When turned it would lean forward revealing a compartment.

Oh you're good! ;) What kind of container would hold the package though? Steel?

I prefer a polymer container, metal is a giveaway to metal detectors, although a sensitive enough detector can pick up the anti-counterfeit strips in the bills $5.00 and over. Thus why I hoard bills that are pre-counterfeit strip. Enough bills with that strip will set off an airport metal detector.

Also, you can bury it at a place with multiple junked cars, etc., like a gravel pit up here. The metal will mess with their detectors. You can also scatter a bunch of nails, screws, etc. (put some in coffee cans and bury them a few feet down, too).

I put $250 of misc cash bills in a steel waterproof film canister I put in a faux small Bose speaker in the corner of my room.
