interesting book
what is more interesting is that the books that are about the dystopian is american society were written so long ago. 1984 was written in the 1950s when consumerism was becoming mainstream but a brave new world was written in 1932 when many people still repaired or made their own tools
consumerism would have started in the late 1800s although with things like the sears catalog i guess
1984 was written in 1948 and is more a criticism of Stalinism and not western society. Orwell was a socialist but was a vocal critic of tyrannical communism and the cult of the personality. Animal Farm was written on the same subject but it a far more literal allegory of the Soviet Union.
Interestingly, Orwell does touch on some of the things Huxley mentioned. In 1984, only the members of Ingsoc are subject to the harsh forms of surveillance, brainwashing, and censorship. The party elites believed the middle class were the biggest threat to their rule, and thus kept a tight leash on them. Many historical revolutions did take root in the middle class.
The lower class on the other hand, the Proles who weren't members of the party, were kept placated with cheap gin, pornography, and mass produced music. In other words, the party keeps them happy by appealing to the lowest common denominator. They don't think so they have no need to fight back. Though Winston does state that they are Oceania's last hope, signalling that Orwell believed the lower class would wake up and fight back eventually.
