I need to remove some thermal paste from my processor and the pins on the processor (long story). Where do I find the strong stuff??

uhhh soaking a CPU into anything does not sound right to me...

The thing is, I've heard of people washing their cpus with wamr water and dish soap, and even putting htem in the dishwasher! And they still worked!

Anyways, if you need to soak the cpu, let it dry for a loooooong time. 🙂

Drug store - ask the pharmacist. The last two times I needed 90+% concentrations it was behind the counter. The 70% stuff was out on the shelves.

There is really no need for 99%. You can get the 90% stuff @ your local Walmart for under $1.

Personally, I use a naptha based carb and choke cleaner to remove the paste, and finish it off with some alcohol.

I just used some rubbing alcohol laying around the house, in a white bottle, dipped a paper towel in it and rubbed the extra thermal paste off. Piece of cake, anything special isn't necessary.

Lighter fluid (as used in Zippos etc.) (naphtha) works great followed by an ordinary alcohol rinse.

Not really. Any hairdryer will dry that CPU in less than 5 minutes.

BTW I always wash my cpus with warm water and little drop of dish washing detergent like Dawn.

91% or whatever is good enough for CPU dies- the Thermalright/whatever recommendations are overkill. Not that I've tried, but I would think that soaking the CPU in isopropyl is safe, provided you give the thing adequate time to dry out. I mean, when you're cleaning the die, you're getting a good amount of isopropyl over the die and package. And you can supposedly soak entire systems in mineral oil without a hitch. Hell, I'd practically put money on being able to submerge a CPU in isopropyl and having it work afterwards. Just my $.02 though.

Just Buy the 91% stuff at a grocery store and some q-tips. Di the q-tips in the alcohol and then clean away !

Well, if you can get your hands on some 100% EtOH, its splash your CPU with it, and it'll all evaporate (completely) within a few seconds. Don't even have to worry about drying.

Seriously though, you don't need to be submerging your cpu in anything !

That is completly over kill, I agree. Nail Polish remover on a cotton ball could take off anything. It's nothing but alcohol and Acitone.

Hey Regs, that stuff has oils and fragrances in it. I quit using it after reading the label. Didn't want that stuff on my cpu/HS.
