sad thing is that i am 14 and he looked 30.
If it's USB 2.0, then it's 480 Mbps regardless of whether x86 or IBM PPC architecture. Which is faster, the 480 Mbps of USB 2.0 or the 400 Mbps of IEEE 1394 (alias: "firewire") 400?

Now, there is an IEEE 1394 _800_ standard that is indeed faster than the USB 2.0 spec, but since you specified IEEE 1394 400, you'll have to deal with having been wrong.

Check benches. FW is faster, if not by a terribly great amount.

Now, my question is, why go to Radio Shack when we have Newegg? :)

Firewire400 should be faster on both Mac and PC

Radio Shack's a place f/ those who don't know better. ... At its best, the quality is ["C+"]. ... If you need something @ the last min. and everywhere else is closed. Radio Shack's the choice f/ the naive, the desperate, the unprepared and the smart bargain hunters. In a rare moment, there are bargains. ... Always remember the rule "Buyers beware." ... No right. No wrong. Just " .. how the World is."

Like the othr writer, do recommend Newegg.com as a better alternative.

no, USB2.0 should be faster (480 vs. 400 Mbps), but in real life it isn't.

Radioshack has had "issues" in recent years, to say the least. They've been left behind as far as consumer electronics goes compared to the rest of the retail world, and they're slowly starting to catch up.

And yes, every salesman/woman there works on commission, so don't blame them (or hate them too much) for trying to sell you cellular phones all the time. The way the compensation plan is setup they make NOTHING for selling tiny little items (the highest profit stuff in the store) and they make a buttload for selling phones ($150+ for 2 phones with some accessories is common). In addition to that, if they don't sell a phone every 25 tickets, the company starts riding them like nobody's business, and basically threatens to fire them.

But all in all, the majority of their work force knows what they're doing, they just know better than to waste their time with things that make them no money, and it's killing the company's profit. They have to retrain everybody to sell profit items, and pay them better to do so, or nothing will get any better there.

All the radio shacks near me require that you show up at a bi-monthly "group training session" at hotel's convention room... we're talking about 10 counties of radio shacks...

Basically, you show up, you're hired, they give you any training you "need" there, and they start putting you on the schedule the next week.

I new they'd hire anyone when I walked in one day and saw 2 of the cheerleaders from my high school working there playing with a remote control dog. (no joke.) I turned, walked out, and was lucky enough to find a gold mine that puts RS to SHAME.
(http://www.partsexpress.com has a 'showroom' as close to me as radioshack does.)

They are opening one in a new strip mall near my house. Can't wait to go in and check out all the batteries. :p

One thing RS is good for is the little doodads & gadgets that no one else seems to have in stock half the time.

radioshack sales people are bunch of morons, a while ago I bumped into my old a$$hole supervisor from computer city(radio shack used to own them too, until they sold it to compusa, remember them?)there because I need an antenna for my OTA HD tuner. I quit computer city because he didnt let me take a vacation to work at my brother's restaurant so he can take a honeymoon. He had no reason not to let me take the vacation, plus I was only a part time, anyway, its funny to see him ringing up my sales, and me knowing I am making at least 2 to 3X more than he does, its a good feeling. ;)

and one time I needed a serial cable, the sales person insist that there is no "universial" serial cable, and I need to find out # of pins and if I need a female or male contactor, then I asked him if he has heard of "PC97?" he gave me a blank stare like I was a computer n00b.

I'm fairly sure that Radio Shack employees are mostly Walmart Electronics dept rejections.

Check benches. FW is faster, if not by a terribly great amount.

Now, my question is, why go to Radio Shack when we have Newegg? :)

This is TruE!

On paper, USB2 is faster. Obviously since 480 is higher then 400. In actual real world performance evaluations, FireWire is faster. Why? I dunno. But its actually pretty significant. Most USB2 devices can't come anywhere close to their "supposed" 480 Mbps.

Firewire can sustain a 400 mbps link, usb2 can peak at 480 but can't maintain a steady stream of data anywhere near 400 mbps.

I'm sure the Rat Shack hires a similar ratio of idiots and knowledgable people like other retail stores do. Like those stores, they'll have trouble retaining smart employees because they'll move on to jobs that pay better than retail. One big difference is that RS employees have to help customers in all of the sections whether it's TV's, cell phones, A/V adapters or soldering irons. It would be hard to be an expert in all the areas. In Circuit City or Best Buy, you can stay in one particular area and only learn that section. Even then, they only learn enough to sell, not to understand.

1 - They have more stores than other electronics stores, so there's always a chance of one being nearby.
2 - Their 30 day return policy is IMHO excellent.
3 - They have electronics items that you cannot get at the big box stores.

Believe me, I'm no fan of RS (I only go there when I know exactly what part I want and I need it now), but they do serve a purpose.

The guy at my Radioshack is a bit on the "homasexal" side, but the man knows his LED's, diodes, and soldering techniques better than I ever will :)
