what type of firms?
if 2-3 is low, what is < 2?

<2 cannot graduate, atleast from what I know.

Top schools as in Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Penn.

Firms as in top firms on Wallstreet, top law firms, etc.

Poor obama, already the butt of many jokes. It's because he's black isn't it?

i dont think the joke was referring to him since you arent going to graduate first in your class from harvard law with a low gpa

Not unless everyone sucked that year...

Ever heard of networking? I envy people who are well-connected 🙁

Didn't Bush have a higher GPA at Yale than John Kerry did?
They were basically tied. Kerry started really bad (mostly Ds) and improved over the years (mostly high Bs). Bush was flat in the C range most of the time. In the end, there average was about the same.

Do they also get lots of interviews with top firms?

By low GPA I mean between 2 and 3.

In this economy, the ability to shine in the interview is pretty important, this can be done regardless of GPA. What is needed is an inside person. If you know someone that can refer you to HR for interview, that is your step in the door. This is what I have been finding out over the past few months.

then after your first job your real-world experience should trump GPA.

Is being well connected a requirement of attending an IVY League school?

I am saying that being well-connected can get your foot in the door for the all important interview. Whether your GPA is hot or not.

And top schools does not mean only Ivy league.

And also, this is in reference to OP's hypothetical 2.0-3.0 GPA student @ a top school. Which you essentially need connections to get many positions in that case.

QFT. Can be the difference between getting the interview or not, have experienced this first-hand. Someone can be better-qualified (on paper) and still miss out because referrer knows you are passionate about X.

So what if you're at a "top school" with a low GPA and sucky networking skills?

Hope one of your buds with a 4.0 gets in a position to put in a word for you real quick... Might help if you were his dealer.

I always imagine the well connected people say "Wasssuppppp baby" whenever they meet one of their contacts.

I don't know why I have this image.
