Where do movies get their sounds?

Ive heard that falling guy sound for like the umpteenth time now... the sound that plays in star wars when boba fett falls into the spikey pit, the sound you get when you click on the academy building in starcraft, the sound almost every movie seems to use when a guy falls off a bridge/high place. Where does that come from? Dont they have any different falling people sounds lol.

Don't forget the sound of the iron door creaking open, and the guy on fire scream. Can they at least try to remix it so that it sounds slightly different...

They have to generate sounds either with physical objects (you can see this sometimes in documentaries or behind the scenes stuff), generate digitally (Even then they usually work with recorded sounds mostly), or get a sound from a database/library with recordings.

EDIT: IF it's the exact same sound, it might be that it's part of a library that many people have access to. If it's not exactly the same, it could be a generic version of a sound.

What about the woman screaming sound. That clip's been used and reused thousands of times. I'm pretty sure it's done on purpose, since it is so easy to identify.

They record a fair bit, plus they probably mess around with prepackaged sound libraries. You can even buy something like this and this

I saw some videos on Youtube that detailed sound effects editing/recording for some popular games (like the Medal of Honor series, the Call of Duty series, Rome: Total War etc.) - pretty much point a microphone at a guy firing a gun, people stomping/marching in a gym, glass shattering, an axe through a wooden plank etc. I imagine the process is fairly similar for movies as well.

There's one roaring monster sound that I hear all the time in cheap sci fi flicks that I know came from Doom.

I would imagine so as well. I think they also use sounds that "sound like it" for instances where.. say punching a guy so hard you knock him out isn't feasible to record.

More likely they both licensed it from the same sound library. If the sound was created specifically for Doom, then the movie production company would get sued by Id Software.

was going to post this.

I hear that sound a lot too, and I originally heard it from those pudgy pig/demon creatures dying from a double barrel shotgun to the face.

I forget the movie but every time I watch it I always recognize the sound that must've been stolen from C&C 95. It sounds JUST like your infantry when they get lit on fire and die.

There's a police siren/radio sound which is all over the place. It plays at the start of Sim City 3000 and is also in films etc.

I love those sounds, you can always pick 'em out:

Boba Fett: "AAHHHHHhhhhhhahhh!"

Guy falling from high place: "yyyyYYYEAHHAWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwww!"

Girl screaming (Way overused in the first season of Heroes): "AHHHH AHHH AHHHHHhhhh!"

Sam Kinison: "OOOHHH OOHHH!"

It's very interesting how they produce the sounds. I saw some movie effects thing on discovery a long time ago. They would smash bunches of celery with blunt objects to get the sound of weapons hitting flesh and bone. Many gory sounds involve fruits and vegetables since they're juicy and have a crunchy sound

They reuse the cop radio clip a lot where it sounds like they are saying the numbers 128 and the rest is inaudible.
