Are basic riding classes offered? Something that will explain the proper techinques for riding safely. Is basic motorcycle operation covered in the class that I have to take through the DMV? OR do they expect you to know how to ride before you get there?

usually the county will have information on that. Go to the place where you would renew your license and ask them... not us

edit: :p

Take one of the courses that these people offer.

In many states, taking that class makes you exempt from having to take the road portion of the driving test to get a motorcycle license, as well (you still have to take the written portion).

Actually AFAIK, most states do the test as part of class. So it's not that you don't take the road test, it's more like it's built into the class.

Passing the class exempts you from having to go to the DMV, or MVC or whatever they call themselves these days for the road test. They will validate your permit and you go to the DMV to get an endorsment added to your existing auto license. It doesn't cover every state, so you should check w/ your local DMV to be sure.

In Beaverton Oregon, you can register for this motorcycle safety class put on by the state. It doesn't cost anything and they run it Saturday mornings here. All you have to do is show up. They provide the bikes and safety gear (helmet). You listen to their little lectures on how to operate a bike, what some of the basic functional features of the bike are (where the brakes are, how to shift, etc.) run their little course on one of their bikes, and take some written test. Pass the class and you get your motorcycle endorsement right there. :)

seems you're in santa rosa, california..

i went to that one in the link.. they used to ride at sf city college.. apparently they're at monster park now.. but yah.. it was a godo experience.. it seemed when i took it, it was 2 classroom courses, and 2 range courses.. it was a lot of fun, and i did it before i was 21.. wow, their prices went up.. when i took it, it was $75 for under 21, and $200 for over 21.. this course included the dmv riding test portion.. they teach you not only to ride, but saftey techniques.. like how to swerve safely to avoid a bus for example... really enjoyable experience

in cali if you take the class all you need is to pass the written test at the dmv for M1 on your license.
