...MOTHERFSCKING PACKING FOAM.

I am trying to return a HD that fried a few weeks back (IMB bah), it's still under warrenty so I got an RMA number from hitachi.
Hitachi have stipulated that i need to use a c/b box with packing foam (link).

I have already tried the following places:
local post office
2 stationary stores
2 mail order companies
6 electronics shops
2 Hi-Fi places
3 skips
numerous bins

where the hell can I get this stuff???????
(in the UK)

whats more I have to ship it to the Netherlands, which is gonna cost £7 alone.

Use some foam insulation from a home improvement store thats what I did. I took three pieces cut a hole in the middle one the size of the HD and sandwiched the HD in the middle. Maxtor accepted that for my RMA.

That's why I hang on to the boxes I get new drives in, never know when you'll need them.. Maybe buy an egg crate mattress pad and hack the right size chunk out of it. :p

Seriously though, I'm not sure where you'd find something like that.

You have to love Maxtor and thier advance RMA. They would send you a drive first then you could send back the bad on in thier box. Sorry that is no help, I have no idea where to get tht foam.

I've tried B&Q and halfords, neither of them had anything like what I wanted
they seem to all use cardboard shipping nowadays, either that or peanuts.

this sucks ass

You should go to a packing supply company. They will have what you need (although it may be in a larger volume than you need).

I used to get rolls of large bubble wrap from the local electronics boutique. I knew people who worked there, and they would jus keep it for me and let me know when to pick it up. They received lots of product that comes wrapped in it and usually dump it all out.

Just get some 1 inch thick pink house insulation... any home improvement store should have it.

Try a computer shop. When I did my rma w/ hitachi I couldn't find foam either. I went to a local computer shop and asked if they had any left over. Guy charged me $3 for it but I think that's worth it.

Try either an upholsterer (probably can let you have some offcuts) or else an art & craft shop - if you're near a John Lewis, they should have it in their haberdashery section.

Google.co.uk (UK only search) for foam + packing gives a good list, including this one: Text

Where are you in UK since your profile says New York? This isn't you is it?

If all else fails, try a local PC World, they may have some left after charging people £25 to fit a new HDD!

yeah, same here. But think about it it's $10 for a material that's sure to be "acceptable" to those RMA fiends. IBM is very strict with the packaging requirments. I've got 2 ibm 40gigers I'm going to reRMA.... and I guess $20 for 80gigs isn't THAT bad.

They may not do that anymore. I remember you had to secure it with a credit card. You then had 30 days to get the drive back to them before they charged you $400 for a 40 gig drive. But you got the perfect free box for shipping the drive back to them.

I have gotten foam from the UPS store before. I'm not sure if it was a regular thing, I just needed some and they cut some for the hdd I was returning.

Try a hardware or crafts store. They should have foam. You don't need foam though, just use bubble wrap. That's how all stores ship it to you anyways.
