Where did this idea of Nintendo being the "party" console come from?

I would wager the 360 and the old Xbox had even more multiplayer games. I think it's just something people say because others say it and it spreads. I always thought the N64 and GC controllers were garbage. I would take a lan session of Halo over any cutesy Nintendo game or Mario Party 46

Yes I had a Wii(traded a 80 gig video Ipod for it) and didn't like it, the Wii Sports was very shallow and felt like a cell phone game.

A LAN session isn't a party...

Dude, people just seem to have a definition of "party" than you do. Wow, Halo compared to Mario Party? You, my friend, are a nerd. Most people want to play with their friends, in the same room in front of the same tv, drunk, and without spending too many braincells.

Exactly... What party have you gone to that had an Xbox LAN?

I can respect peoples opinion that Nintendo consoles are the party consoles, I just don't think so imo.

Well right from there, your opinion on video games after this statement is worthless.

Ah, therefore because YOU would prefer that, obviously nobody should like Nintendo stuff or consider it a party console. Everyone should just sit there and play YAFPS.

Not everyone is into shooting games or realistic looking racing games. I agree that the GC didn't have a very good controller, but the Wii's controllers are just intuitive. Also the games that the Wii has are the types anyone can get into, not just hard core gamers. Another thing is that the Wii's multiplayer "kiddie" games (like Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Party, etc.) are just "pick up and play" type games that don't require you to invest hours into the game. Most people can't sit in front of a screen playing for hours on end and find quick 10 minute gaming sessions just as fun. Playing with friends and family in these games can be fun as well. I get a kick out of watching my parents and grandparents playing each other in bowling Wii Sports and the fishing game in Wii Play.

Nintendo has a lot of arcade style party games. They've had a lock on this segment for some time.

What the average person considers a "party game" is different than a nerd LAN party with Quake.

Drunk people flailing around and having a goofy time is one part of a party, silly.

Add music, dancing, drugs, junk food, and more booze... Then you've got a party.

FPS games are hardly mainstream party games.

Anyway,

1) GC had native four-player connectors, PS2 did not
2) The only good games for the GC near the end of its life were party games

There are bars here that have specific Wii party nights. THey hook up a few Wii's to the big screen and everyone goes to town.

A fun one.

Seconded.

Whenever I have a party, the wii is coming out whether I want to play or not. Guests sure do like it though.

Indeed, Super Smash Brothers and stupid games that escape my memory now kept drunk people happy for hours. It's good button smashing fun, the wii steps that up considerably.
