Where did this idea of Nintendo being the "party" console come from?

It's very simple, the gamecube and the Wii both have games centered around a group of people playing from the same unit. Mario Party, Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, Crystal Chronicles, and various other games all thrive in the party atmosphere. Party games also have a focus on luck over skill, which means they are usually fun for everyone although that doesn't necessarily mean they are easy or dull either. Wii Sports added to this, being a game adults could get into and play with little experience.

I haven't gone to one yet. Buddy has though and said it was a blast, ironically the bar was empty though.

Dude, people just seem to have a definition of "party" than you do. Wow, Halo compared to Mario Party? You, my friend, are a nerd. Most people want to play with their friends, in the same room in front of the same tv, drunk, and without spending too many braincells.

Whenever I have a party, the wii is coming out whether I want to play or not. Guests sure do like it though.

I just had a party a few weeks ago. Had probably 50ish people. There was a Gamecube on a 32", a Wii on a 50", and a full size standup with Metal Slug 3 (a real Neo Geo even).

There were still plenty of people hanging in the kitchen and out by the BBQ or dancing to the music as well, but all of the video games got a lot of use. And everyone played a bit here and there, not just nerds or anti-social types.

Is it so hard to grasp the concept that there are people that enjoy playing cutesy arcade type games together in a room instead of HALO? When was the last time you heard a girl talk about HALO? Just because you rather play it doesn't disqualify games like mario party and Wii sports from being party games. Those games are seen as being more easily accessible to casual gamers and they are on systems like the N64 / Wii / GC so I don't how you can see it's not one? Sure you may not like it but it doesn't mean it's not true.

And of course a simplified version : people (typically non-hardcore gamers) hanging out -> enjoys simple to play, easy to pick up games -> games found on Nintendo consoles -> put all in one room -> party (console)

Kind of like how everyone says Nintendo games are for kids. N64 controller did suck, but you have to take into account when it was made - it had to bridge the gap between the D-pad era and the analog stick era, and it did a decent job of that. Sorry that cartoonish graphics interfere with your ability to have fun.

Yes I had a Wii(traded a 80 gig video Ipod for it) and didn't like it, the Wii Sports was very shallow and felt like a cell phone game.

I think the point of the game went over your head.

Because starting with the N64, it had four controller inputs. And GREAT multiplayer games. Its much more fun to play beside someone, than over the net I think. Playing Mario Party, Super Smash Brothers, or any of the Kart racing games, or any of the several dozen or so great multiplayer games. Not to mention Wii.

Not everyone likes Halo. And certainly not everyone likes playing a FPS with a controller. Its just retarded. Also, lans are not a party.
