back in the days of yore when butter thread's were prevalent, and everyone was a WMC, there was a user named Nef. He got banned for "neffing", and the term stuck.

I assume when you say "butter threads" you mean pictures of girls and "But her...." ?

What's a WMC?

I believe "nef" originated here at Anandtech - there was a user named Nef that kept spamming

Actually, he made 20 "test" posts in a row to increase his member status from Junior Member. The mods immediately banned the user Nef, but the name lives on in infamy.

A user named Nowhereman started a thread in Nov. '98 debating whether or not butter should be left sitting out or refrigerated. Many people chimed in their opinion, and the thread ballooned to over 400 posts rather quickly. Mind you, this is when there was only a few hundred registered users on Anandtech, and at the time this was by far the largest thread anyone had ever seen (it grew to around 800 posts). It was the stuff that legends were made of, my friend.

Your second question is also valid. When Anandtech was still relatively small, Buy.com mispriced a 19" Hitachi monitor to $187.00 (original price was around $350). Word spread on Anandtech - and the Internet as a whole - like wildfire (this was why the Hot Deals forum was created). When Buy.com said they were only going to honor the first 150 orders (out of 10,000+), hundreds of users flocked here to cry "fowl." Many users here felt Buy.com had no responsibility to honor the wrong price, so they would often take stabs at those who felt "ripped off." Thus, the Wounded Monitor Children name was created (by Russ I believe?) to desribe those who whined and cried like babies about not getting their monitor. In the end, Buy.com was forced to send out checks for $47 to everyone who ordered to settle the dispute.

The question is... did Nef make his name up or did he get it from somewhere else where neffing was a term for useless posts?

NEF is short for the Latin-derived adjective "Nefarious", meaning "flagrantly wicked or impious".

Evil and Vicious are synonyms :p
