Where did the perception that AMD760 chipset is superior come from?

Most of the posts I've been reading over the last 1-1 1/2 weeks seem centered on the AMD760 chipset, supposedly (verifiably?) your best choice for a T-Bird and DDR combo. I'd like to know why people focus on this chipset so much.

If it is because the chipset outperforms comparable DDR platforms, then by how much? Are we talking more frames/second in a first person shooter, or improved stability, or what?

I'm really bringing this up as part of a larger question. I'm new to shopping for mobos and I feel a lot of pressure to buy one soon--if only because it will help me save the two to three hours a day I spend checking the forums and other web sites for the "golden mobo."
 
its because its the fastest platform in terms of performance. i haven't heard anything about stability.
 
one of the problems with AMD 760 boards is that you still have to have a Via southbridge (since no board is using 766 soutbridge) that sucks.
 
As things stand, there are only three chipsets for the Socket A single processor DDR platform, the AMD760, VIA KT266 and the ALi Magik 1.

The AMD760 currently outperforms both of the other chipsets in terms of memory bandwidth, overclockability and as a stable platform. The ALi Magik isn't bad, but simply isn't as fast, whereas the KT266, despite appearing to have a lot of potential, is still relatively immature as a platform and has some stability and a seemingly random performance level.

The AMD760 is currently the one to buy - and out of that the Epox 8K7A and Gigabyte GA-7DXR appear to be the boards of choice if you take the general consensus opinion from this forum and hardware review sites.
 
Raspewtin, the AMD766 southbridge is not any better performance wise than the VIA chipset most AMD760 based boards use, so it's not much of an issue.

I am not aware of any amd761 MB using anything else...
